Tea is one of Sri Lanka's most important and famous exports. Tea production in Sri Lanka began in the middle of the 19th century. In 1867, the first British planters brought seeds of tea plants from China. Since then tea plantations have spread to many parts of Sri Lanka, particularly in the central highlands, Uva and the hill country.
