Tour Overview

Ecuador is a fantastic place to climb and a great travel destination in its own right. With a diversity of vegetation zones, from the tropical equatorial jungle to the high alpine plateau, Ecuador is dotted with majestic snow-capped volcanoes rising to over 6000m. To appreciate these remarkable contrasts we climb a range of peaks (Cotopaxi, Illiniza Norte, etc), culminating in an attempt on Ecuador's highest peak, Chimborazo. Under the guidance of our mountain guides we undertake glacier training and practice and develop the skills needed for the bigger peaks. Providing you have an excellent level of fitness this trip is suitable for experienced trekkers that are keen to go a step further and climb their first 6000m peak. Visits to the Otavalo market, Quito and the beautiful Quilotoa Lake ensure this expedition is more than just mountains but a complete Ecuadorian experience.

Both lines are only 200m apart. We will start our summit ascent of Mt Cotopaxi around midnight. You will only need to carry the gear and food you require for the climb and the rest of your luggage can be left at the refuge. It will take us approximately 5-7 hours to the summit, dependent on weather conditions. At the beginning the path is rocky until we reach the edge of the glacier. The level of ascent ranges from moderate to demanding as some of the slopes are exremely steep. The summit crater area is vast and normally covered in its entirety either in soft snow or penitentes. The climb to the summit can take 6-9 hours and the descent back to the refuge about 4 hours. This is a very long day which includes some ice ramps, snow bridges and sections of icefall and it’s essential to have a very good fitness level. Accommodation

10 nights hotel
Basic accommodation in mountain huts in the National Parks. The huts are bunk style accommodation with 4 or more people and shared bathroom facilities. The atmosphere in the huts is convivial and friendly and is part of the experience when trekking in Ecuador. Most of the hotels and lodges we use in cities can be described as 3 star accommodation. In smaller towns and villages hotel options are often limited and we might have to use more basic accommodation with a lower or without star rating. Please note that the star rating in South America is very fluid and can’t be compared to a western standard star rating, however you can be assured of clean, comfortable and well located lodgings.

What You Carry

In your daypack you will need to carry extra warm clothing (depending on the altitude, location and weather), a rain jacket, water bottle, camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip-eze etc. On the days spent mountaineering, you will also need to carry your climbing equipment (crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, etc). On some days of the trek you will need to carry a full pack including climbing equipment, clothes, sleeping bag, personal items, etc (please see trip notes for details). A personal guide can be hired for the summit ascents. This guide will not carry your gear but will walk with you at your own pace. This can be beneficial if you think you might be slower or faster than the rest of the group.

Grading

Participants should be competent and self sufficient in the outdoors and have experience in multi day trekking at altitude. Prior experience on an entry level mountaineering expedition is highly recommended. The terrain will involve low to moderate angle snow slopes and traveling on crevassed glaciers and few snow/icy slopes. Experience using ice axe and crampons is preferred but not essential. Please see the 'Am I Suitable' and 'Physical Requirements' paragraphs in this document for further details.

Yet what our departures provide is both structure and flexibility, allowing you plenty of freedom within the framework of the itinerary. You’ll find that with our maximum group size at 16, you’ll travel in a minimal impact style with a great group of like-minded travellers.

  • Can you advise which vaccinations are recommended?

While our pre-departure kit provides information on vaccinations, we suggest that you consult your doctor, local government inoculation centre or a travel medical specialist in order to get the most current advice regarding vaccination requirements.
