Our Sri Lanka Adventure tour sure was an adventure! The first half of the tour ran smoothly, with visits to a number of interesting historical sites and some great walks up steep rocks to reach Buddhist temples. Sigiriya was a real highlight - spectacular spot and a challenging walk, especially the last bit, which is basically a metal staircase bolted onto the rock face. But when we reached Kandy (the Botanical gardens of which was well worth visiting) it started to rain. And rain. Very, very heavily. For the next 36 hours. Landslides meant we couldn't reach the start of the Adam's Peak walk and the rivers became too dangerous for the white water rafting and canoeing parts of the tour. However, an alternative itinerary had us on a wonderful walk at Horton's Plain - beautiful spot - and then onto a safari at Hala National Park, where we saw numerous animals including a glimpse of a leopard and a sloth bear. We also went to Gall and visited the Dutch Fort area, which was excellent and also not on the original itinerary. Luckily we were still able to go to the Udawalawe National Park, where saw two elephants fighting and were then chased by another elephant. All in all, we think we did well even though the itinerary had to radically change. I'd only say Colombo didn't seem worth a visit - rather have ended the tour where we started, at Negombo, with a nice beach and beach cricket to watch every evening. ...more ...less
