Tour Overview

Morocco’s location on the edge of the Sahara, together with its historic trade links with European ports, has shaped its rich cultural heritage. The blend of mosques and minarets, exotic medina's filled with interesting market stalls brimming with spices and scents and great imperial cities are a constant source of intrigue while our trek in the High Atlas provides a remote dimension to our journey. Our fully escorted tour travels from Casablanca to Meknes, Moulay Idriss, Fes and Marrakesh to enjoy a fascinating introduction to the souqs, medina's and riads, take a camel ride to view sunrise over the Sahara and experience the contrasting landscapes of this fascinating land. Wander the narrow lanes in the midst of these cities, mixing with local people and absorbing everything to which your senses are exposed. We also take a fascinating deviation to Chefchaouen, a gorgeous mountain city in northeastern Morocco with its distinctive blue-washed homes and a Mediterranean theme. A trek in the Atlas Mountains follows trails through traditional Berber villages and to alpine pastures. A non-technical ascent of Jebal Toubkal (4167m), the highest mountain in Morocco, is a highlight of the trip before we return to Marrakesh where our adventure concludes.

Day 1 : Join Casablanca

If you are arriving on Day 1 of the trip you will be met and transferred to your group hotel. If you arrive on any other day please make your own way to the joining hotel as listed on your final tour voucher. Meet your guide and group members at a briefing at approximately 7:00pm on Day 1 (details will be at the reception of group hotel). Overnight: Idou Anfa Hotel (or similar).

Day 2 : Drive To Rabat (Approx 2 Hrs Drive)

This morning we will visit Casablanca’s beautiful Hassan II Mosque. Then we will drive to Rabat, the capital of Morocco, to visit the Grand Mosque - another very imposing and highly decorated structure. Overnight Riad Kelaa (or similar). Approx driving time: 2 hrs.

Day 3 : Drive To Chefchaouen (Approx 4.5 Hrs Drive)

Drive north along the fertile plains to Ouazzane. Continue on the mountain road to Chefchaouen, which is built on the lower slopes of the Rif Mountains. The houses here are painted blue, typical of the Andalusian style. In the late afternoon we will visit the Medina. Overnight Hotel Dar Mounir (or similar). Approx driving time: 4.5 hrs.

Day 4 : Explore Chefchaouen

Full day to soak up the atmosphere of the prettiest mountain town of the Rif mountain range. After breakfast, we will have a guided tour to the Medina including the Kasbah, the Outa Lhmam square and the souks. There will be free time in the afternoon to explore on your own. The guide can offer various suggestions, such as a walk up to the Spanish mosque via the spring of Ras El Ma for a panoramic view; or visit to a local weaving shop or cooperative. Overnight Hotel Dar Mounir (or similar).

Day 5 : Drive To Fes Via Moulay Idriss, Volubilis And Meknes (Approx 4.5 Hrs Drive)

Today we have time to explore the ancient Roman ruins at Volubilis, the largest and best preserved in the country and originally one of the Roman Empire's remotest outposts. We also wander around the beautiful village of Moulay Idriss, a holy site, named after Morocco's most revered saint of the same name. Moulay Idriss was the great grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and founder of the first Moroccan dynasty. The city of Meknes was once the heart of the Moroccan sultanate with many impressive buildings as a result. Continuing to Fes, founded in the late 8th Century shortly after the Arabs swept across North Africa and Spain, we arrive at the symbolic heart of Morocco. It has become the cultural and religious centre of the country and has retained a distinctly Arab identity despite the arrival of some Berbers from the interior over the centuries. Today Fes is made up of three sections, the modern Ville Nouvelle, with its chic cafe-lined avenues, Fes el-Jdid and Fes el-Bali. Fes el-Bali is the original Medina and is one of the largest medieval cities in the world. Overnight Riad Yacout (or similar). Approx driving time: 4.5 hrs.

Day 6 : Explore Fes

After a guided tour of the city and old Medina we drive to Borj Sud, a Christian fort built in the 17th Century, for an almost aerial view of the old city and its surrounding olive groves. From here we venture into the Medina of Fes el-Bali which dates back to the 8th Century. In 1976 UNESCO declared this Medina one of the world's cultural treasures; the palaces, mosques and fountains are among the most beautiful in Morocco. The colours and aromas of the olive and spice stores mixed in with communal bakeries and the mysterious perfume shops are just some of the delights that make this journey through the ancient alleyways, full of scurrying people and surprises, a memorable experience. We will also visit the tannery to watch the dying of leathers and a mosaic and tile factory to see how these stunning local handicrafts are made. We will enjoy a lunch in a traditional Moroccan restaurant. Overnight Riad Yacout (or similar).

Day 7 : Drive To Erg Chebbi (Approx 8 Hrs Drive)

Today we will be on the road by 7:00am. We travel in our air-conditioned minibus passing through the agricultural regions of north Morocco and the fertile plains irrigated by the Oued Aggai in the foothills of the Middle Atlas. We then begin a long climb through an old cedar forest and holm oaks. The scenery changes dramatically where beyond Timhadite lies a completely barren plateau, reminiscent of a lunar landscape pitted with small volcanic craters, the largest of which is Sidi Ali, an immense lake bordered by steep cliffs. After stopping for lunch at the breathtaking Ziz Gorges we continue on past palm-fringed towns to Erfoud and Merzouga, and to the sand dunes at Erg Chebbi. Here the deep orange-hued dunes of the vast Sahara stretch for miles. Overnight Auberge Tombouctou (or similar). Approx driving time: 8 hrs.

Day 8 : Erg Chebbi, Drive To The Dades Gorge (Approx 5 Hrs Drive)

Today we'll rise before dawn to experience the amazing colours of a Saharan sunrise from the saddle of the traditional Berber transport: a camel. On returning to our hotel we have breakfast and commence our journey to the Dades Gorge. En route we have lunch at the spectacular Todra Gorges and visit some of Morocco's greatest antiquities, the Kasbahs of the eastern slopes of the High Atlas. We drive on to the spectacular Dades Gorge where we stay in a small local hotel. We also take time to explore the countryside and wander for a few hours through the fertile fields and local villages soaking in rural Morocco. Overnight Hotel Xaluca (or similar). Approx driving time: 5 hrs.

Day 9 : Visit Berber Villages En Route To Ouarzazate (Approx 2.5 Hrs Drive)

En route to Ouarzazate (pronounced war-zar-zate), we explore the Kasbahs, oasis and Berber villages in the fertile valleys along the eastern flanks of the Atlas Mountains. We may visit the ancient Kasbahs of Skoura and depending on the day, explore the markets of El-Klaa Mgouna. The earthen town of Ouarzazate lies among the shadows of date and pomegranate trees on the banks of the Dades River. Overnight Dar Mouna guesthouse near Ait Ben Haddou (or similar in Ouarzazate). Approx driving time: 2.5 hrs.

Day 10 : Visit Ait Ben Haddou Then To Marrakesh (Approx 4.5 Hrs Drive)

This morning we will visit the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, the most exotic and best preserved in the entire Atlas area. We will have lunch before continuing on to Telouet and the former palace of Pasha El Glaoui, the Berber chieftain. Passing sandy coloured Kasbahs and the shy Berber women in their traditional black costumes, we leave the arid desert area and cross the High Atlas Mountains to arrive in Marrakesh late in the afternoon. Framed by the snowy heights of the Atlas Mountains and thousand-year-old palm groves, Marrakesh has a profound impact on all that visit it. Overnight Riad Berta (or similar). Approx driving time: 4.5 hrs.

Day 11 : Visit Medinas, Palaces And Gardens In Marrakesh

Today we are led by our expert guide to discover the soul of Marrakesh. We visit gardens, mosques, palaces, and the souqs of the old Medina before reaching the humming centre of Marrakesh: the Djemaa el-Fna. The atmosphere of this square is overwhelming with its jumble of food stalls, snake charmers, fortune and storytellers and the wide variety of people that flock to its attractions. We return in the evening, when the square really comes alive. It is a must to taste the many wonderful dishes on offer at the stalls. You will be given your kit bag and sleeping bag to pack your gear for the trek. Overnight Riad Berta (or similar).

Day 12 : Drive To Azzadene Valley (Approx 3.5 Hrs Drive) & Trek To Tiziane (1600M, 5 Hrs)

Meeting up with our porters and their mules at Imi Oughlad (1500m), we begin our trek with a gradual ascent on a mule path to the pass of Tizi n Tacht (2000m). As we walk up the Azzadene Valley we pass small villages shaded by walnut and apple trees, plots of maize and stone walls with beautiful yellow pumpkin flowers creeping over, before descending to the village of Tiziane (1600m). Overnight in a Berber house.

Day 13 : Trek To Tizgui (1800M, Approx 6 Hrs)

Leaving Tiziane via Tizi N'Touati (2100m) we ascend for 3 hours to reach the Tassaka Plateau passing holm oaks and junipers. Tonight we will camp near Tizgui at Azib Assoul. Overnight: camping

Day 14 : To Tizi Oussem (1850M, Approx 5 Hrs)

We ascend steeply from Tizgui towards the Tizi N'Tagoudalte pass at 2700m where we will be rewarded with fine views. Our gradual descent to Tizi Oussem, passes through alpine areas overgrown with beautiful wildflowers: campanulas, red poppies, iris, walls of violets, various herbs and small succulents. Overnight in the village staying in a Berber house where you may have the option to enjoy a private hammam, a local bath to wash away three days trekking.

Day 15 : To Tazagharte Refuge (3000M, Approx 5 Hrs)

Leaving Tizi Oussem, the last village in this valley, we continue to climb up the Azzadene Valley catching glimpses of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. We will enjoy the Cascade d'Irhoulidene and continue to wind our way up the mountain until we reach our accommodation for the night in a mountain refuge. Overnight: camping

Day 16 : Trek To Refuge Nelter (3200M, Approx 6-7 Hrs)

Today we cross the impressive and remote Tizi n'Ougalzim (3700m), a steep and rocky pass that zigzags its way steadily up, rewarding us at the top with magnificent views. Upon reaching the top we see the next challenge awaiting us: Mount Toubkal. We descend to our campsite below and enjoy the alpine scenery with the surrounding dramatic peaks that the base camp offers us. Please note this camp is the only place to stay in this area and a National Park rule to stay here; for this reason it is utilised by many groups and unfortunately there might be evidence of rubbish or not as clean as we would like. Overnight: camping

Day 17 : Summit Of Mount Toubkal (4167M, Approx 7 Hrs)

We have an early start for our attempt on Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. The summit of Toubkal is neither technical nor very demanding, and once at the summit, the views are spectacular. We may start off in the dark to avoid the midday sun. If you prefer, you have the option of a rest day relaxing in camp located at the foot of the peaks, and surrounded by mountains. Overnight: camping

Day 18 : Trek To Imlil (Approx 5 Hrs); Drive To Marrakesh (Approx 1.5 Hrs Drive)

Today we walk down the valley passing through the deeply religious village of Sidi Chamarouch. This area is also rich in wildflowers and in spring we'll find the magnificent Peony Rose. We will also pass herds of goats traversing precarious mountain trails. We take lunch outside the village where we farewell our trekking crew and their mules before driving to Marrakesh. Overnight Riad Berta (or similar).

Accommodation

6 nights hotel
All accommodation is on a twin share basis with ensuite rooms, unless single rooms are requested and paid for in advance. If you are a single traveller, you will be matched up with someone of the same gender for the duration of the trip.
We use 3 star hotel or riad (traditional Moroccan house) accommodation in the cities (Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes and Marrakesh). These are comfortable, well-run properties which, where possible, emanate some of the local charm. In the more remote areas we use the best available accommodation which may be more basic. Please note that accommodation in the village house in the mountains (2 nights) is based on twin share only as there are no single rooms available. Any hotels specified in the itinerary are subject to change due to availability.
For the trekking portion of your itinerary we will provide kit bags to store your gear (these must remain in Morocco at the end of your trip), sleeping bags, 7cm foam mattresses and two-person tents. Separate dining, kitchen and toilet tents are also provided along with all general camping equipment.

What You Carry

In your daypack you will need to carry extra warm clothing, a rainjacket, water bottle, camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip balm etc. Mules carry all group gear and your trek pack.

Grading

This expedition involves trekking through undulating country, often untracked, for up to eight hours a day at a steady pace. To undertake this level of activity you will need a good level of trekking fitness and be sure-footed. Some days involve walking over rugged terrain, including boulders, scree and heavily vegetated ground. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. The majority of our moderately graded treks involve the carrying of a day pack only, though some may involve carrying a full pack. Morocco can get quite warm in the summer months so any experience in dealing with physical activity in warm conditions would be advantageous. Keeping hydrated and being prepared for variable weather conditions is a must.
Suggested preparation; 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week and extended periods of exercise during the weekend will accustom you to regular exercise. Hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions will be beneficial if you are taking part in a trekking adventure, kayaking or road cycling is also recommended depending upon the activity you plan to undertake.

Check out our Q&As

  • Who will be my travelling companions on the tour?

We have offices on three continents which means your travelling companions will be just that – international and wonderfully eclectic. Part of small group travel means that although travellers come from various locations and backgrounds, you will be travelling with like-minded companions who, like you, are keen to share the experience and forge lifelong friendships.

  • What about environmental impact?

We believe that adventure travel revolves around establishing a strong relationship with the people and environments in which we operate. Our responsible travel policies have been carefully developed to ensure that we minimise the impact of our presence and help to protect the regions we visit while contributing positively to the local community.

  • What should I pack?

Your pre-departure documents include a detailed packing list with items that you need to bring. While most of the equipment for daily activities is included in your tour cost, some items like helmets and hiking boots are best brought from home. The pre-departure documents also include information on layering and recommended brands for various items to ensure you are fully prepared for your trip.

  • Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

Yes. World Expeditions does not require single travellers to pay a surcharge for travelling alone on the vast majority of our trips. Our holidays are primarily on a twin share basis, so if you are joining the group as a solo traveller, we will match you with someone of your own gender. The choice is yours however; if you prefer not to share, we do offer single supplements for private occupancy.

  • Are tips included in my trip price?

Tips are not included in the tour cost. Tipping is a personal thing, do not worry about how much, or when, to tip. Tipping guidelines are provided for certain destinations in our pre departure information upon booking, however the best advice will be provided by your tour leader.

  • Am I suited to small-group travel?

We recognise that many of our travellers have not been on a ‘group trip’ before. Yet what our departures provide is both structure and flexibility, allowing you plenty of freedom within the framework of the itinerary. You’ll find that with our maximum group size at 16, you’ll travel in a minimal impact style with a great group of like-minded travellers.

  • Can you advise which vaccinations are recommended?

While our pre-departure kit provides information on vaccinations, we suggest that you consult your doctor, local government inoculation centre or a travel medical specialist in order to get the most current advice regarding vaccination requirements.

Morocco: another outstanding World Expeditions adventure! This was my 6th trip with World Expeditions, and once again, it did not disappoint. I’m always so impressed with the guides and support staff, who do their jobs flawlessly. Boubker was our guide and right from the start, he was on his game. He knew his country and communicated his vast knowledge to us as we drove through the country visiting fascinating sites and learning the intriguing history of Morocco. He could answer any question given to him. Plus, he was fun, personable and fit right in with our group. Luckily, we had a harmonious group of adventurers from Australia, USA, Northern Ireland and Canada, which made the trip even more fun. In addition to the captivating sites along the way, the camel ride to watch a sunrise, a sudden sandstorm that caused Hassan, our excellent van driver, to do some successful off-roading (!), an afternoon conversing with and buying rugs from local tribespeople (I love my rug!), and the glorious hikes in the High Atlas Mountains made the trip one of the best ever. Speaking of the trek in the High Atlas Mountains, the cooks and muleteers were simply phenomenal. Not only did we have delicious food, it was beautifully displayed – even at 10,000 feet! They worked hard to ensure we were well-fed and our tents were ready for us when we reached the various camps. Above all, they were always smiling and helping us in any way we needed. If you are thinking of going to Morocco, GO! This trip has it all – culture, adventure, hiking. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

The trip was great made more so by the guide - Hassan - and the other Moroccan support staff including drivers and guides and muleteers/cook. Of the course the other tourists also made the trip exciting as always good to get a good group of people who all get on. There is a lot to see in Morocco and the history, sites and activities went all well together over 18 days to give me an insight in to Morocco. Accommodation in Riads were fantastic in all the cities, good locations, friendly and helpful staff and the ambiance inside just right for relaxation after a long day. The highlights of the trip were Fez, Mezogas, Marrakesh and of course the Atlas trek of which climbing Mt Toubkhal and staying in Berber guest house in the Atlas. I am not sure we had typical Moroccan food as I eat a lot of it at home and it was different.

We found that this trip was a great blend, first providing the history of the Imperial Cities, the culture and the food of the local people, and the challenge of climbing in the High Atlas Mountains, supported by a mule team. There was time for activity and relaxation. We have great respect for the people who were observing the month of Ramadan, so that while we were eating and drinking water through each day, they did not quench their hunger or thirst until sunset. There were some extremely hot days, that must have made their job very trying, but they were forever cheerful.

We were thrilled with our recent experience. Our guide Ahmed was amazing- friendly knowledgeable, amazing English and interested in ensuring we had the most incredible experiences. It was easy to organise our own private itinerary so that we saw the places we wanted to see, and did the activities we were interested in. The hotels we were lodged in were superb, and the tour guides provided in the cities were knowledgeable and fascinating. I couldn't recommend our guide Ahmed or driver Mustafa more highly.

Overall our experience of the Morocco Adventure ( combining the Explorer and High Atlas trips together) was fantastic and I would recommend it thoroughly. Marked as outstanding: 1. Our guide, Ahmed El Qabii, was outstandingly good, professional, and calm in the face of difficult decisions for the group. I could not commend him highly enough. Meeting Ahmed has had a significant impact on my life. He is a remarkable person. 2. The route we took on both trips was excellent. The Atlas trek was interesting and varied. 3. The quality of accomodation was mostly good and it was a positive to be located in the Medinas where possible. If any reservations, there could have been a bit more food to eat during the high Atlas trek. Salt and pepper on the table would have been good, as would hot water in a bowl for a wash on the tenting days. On easy trekking days it would help if faster walkers go walk at their comfortable pace when the trail permits. We have done this on other WE trips. Not much to complain about though, and the lasting impression is of a great trip and we intend to join World Expeditions again in the future.
