Overnight: Barcelo Hotel or similar.

Day 2 : Guatemala City Panoramic Tour And Transfer To Chichicastenango Via Iximche

In the morning you will be picked up at your hotel for a panoramic sightseeing tour of Guatemala City where the principal sites you will visit include the National Palace, Cathedral, and Civic Center Complex. You will also visit residential areas, for an overall view of our rapidly growing metropolis (No shorts or bathing suits permitted). Overnight: Mayan Inn or similar.

Day 3 : Market At Chichicastenango, Journey To Quetzaltenango

Today we visit the superb market at Chichicastenango. Livestock, handicrafts, fruit and embroidery all give way in this bustling market to the focal point – the church, strewn with flowers and filled with genuflecting Indians whose elaborate rituals see them crawling to the altar, while ‘Cofradias’, or members of the traditional brotherhood, swing incense above their heads. In the afternoon, transfer for Quetzaltenango. Overnight: Latam Hotel or similar.

Day 4 : Lake Atitlan

Visit San Andres Xecul, Zunil and Almolonga on the way to Lake Atitlán. In the afternoon, transfer to Panajachel (Lake Atitlan) to enjot Sololá Market. Lake Atitlan is surrounded by volcanoes and its shores are dotted with Indian villages, all of which have retained their distinctive cultures – the local dress and colours varies from village to village, and market stalls line the narrow streets. Overnight: Porta Hotel del Lago or similar.

Day 9 : Yaxha Sightseeing

Transfer to Yaxha & Topoxte for sightseeing of the archaeological sites. After lunch transfer back to Tikal. Overnight: Camino Real Tikal or Villa Maya Hotel or similar.

Day 10 : To Tikal, Fly To Guatemala City

Sightseeing of Tikal. The majesty of the Mayan ruins at Tikal is striking. The winding, mossy jungle paths open up to a surreal world of pyramids and temples, where howler monkeys, frogs and birds like toucans create a cacophonous crescendo. Tikal has a number of step pyramids whose forty-four or so metres you can climb to gain a view across the jungle canopy. From the maze of courtyards of the Great Plaza, temples spread out into the jungle, including the Temple of the Grand Jaguar, and the North Acropolis of King Moon Double Comb. The Mayans settled in Tikal around 700 BC and had started to build the grand North Acropolis by 200 BC. By the time of Christ, the Grand Plaza was being built from stone, but it wasn’t until AD 250 that Tikal became a religious and cultural centre. It reached its glory under King Great Jaguar Paw in AD 300 and underwent a renaissance around AD 700 under King Moon Double Comb, before falling into a mysterious decline, like other Mayan centres, around AD 900. In the afternoon board your flight back to Guatemala City. Overnight: Barcelo Hotel or similar.

Day 11 : To Airport, Where Our Trip Concludes.

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.

What You Carry

You will be required to carry all your luggage between hotels and transportation. On sightseeing days you will be required to carry a day pack with your camera, water proof clothing and any other personal items you may require during the day.

Grading

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery involve little or no extended activity and are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms.

Check out our Q&As

  • Who will be my travelling companions on the tour?

We have offices on three continents which means your travelling companions will be just that – international and wonderfully eclectic. Part of small group travel means that although travellers come from various locations and backgrounds, you will be travelling with like-minded companions who, like you, are keen to share the experience and forge lifelong friendships.

  • What about environmental impact?

We believe that adventure travel revolves around establishing a strong relationship with the people and environments in which we operate. Our responsible travel policies have been carefully developed to ensure that we minimise the impact of our presence and help to protect the regions we visit while contributing positively to the local community.

  • What should I pack?

Your pre-departure documents include a detailed packing list with items that you need to bring. While most of the equipment for daily activities is included in your tour cost, some items like helmets and hiking boots are best brought from home. The pre-departure documents also include information on layering and recommended brands for various items to ensure you are fully prepared for your trip.

  • Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

Yes. World Expeditions does not require single travellers to pay a surcharge for travelling alone on the vast majority of our trips. Our holidays are primarily on a twin share basis, so if you are joining the group as a solo traveller, we will match you with someone of your own gender. The choice is yours however; if you prefer not to share, we do offer single supplements for private occupancy.

  • Are tips included in my trip price?

Tips are not included in the tour cost. Tipping is a personal thing, do not worry about how much, or when, to tip. Tipping guidelines are provided for certain destinations in our pre departure information upon booking, however the best advice will be provided by your tour leader.

  • Am I suited to small-group travel?

We recognise that many of our travellers have not been on a ‘group trip’ before. Yet what our departures provide is both structure and flexibility, allowing you plenty of freedom within the framework of the itinerary. You’ll find that with our maximum group size at 16, you’ll travel in a minimal impact style with a great group of like-minded travellers.

  • Can you advise which vaccinations are recommended?

While our pre-departure kit provides information on vaccinations, we suggest that you consult your doctor, local government inoculation centre or a travel medical specialist in order to get the most current advice regarding vaccination requirements.

This trip is so well organised. I did not have to worry about anything. This was a big plus for me as a solo traveller. Guides were on time and very knowledgeable.

Guatemala Encompassed

This trip covers two of the three main touring areas of Guatemala, the highlands in the south and the Peten area (Mayan sites) in the north. It is run by World Expedition's local partners, with a high standard in vehicles, drivers and guides. The highlands segment (6 days) was excellent - the itinerary is varied and includes some very interesting places not commonly covered on other tours in this area. There is also a good amount of free time in lovely Antigua, so that you can fit in the Pacaya volcano trip (half day, either morning or afternoon) as an option. The Peten section was executed by another one of WE's local partners and it visits the fabulous Mayan sites of Tikal and Yaxha. We were not so impressed with the third site, Ceibal. Accommodation standard is generally very good, and the Barcelo in Guatemala is a lovely base, the Hotel Camino Real Tikal in Peten, is a lovely resort hotel and convenient to Tikal and Yaxha, but 40 minutes from Flores.
