Day 3 : Moyne To Glenmalure 21 Km/13 Miles Approx 6 Hours Walking

Location: Moyne

Accommodation Name: Inn or B&Bs

Meals Included: Breakfast

An ethereal section of the Wicklow Way, that winds you through forest trails and into two spectacular vales; the Ow and the Glenmalure Valleys. The day is hilly and there are lots of forests, but there is also a high level moorland alternative for good weather only. The first part of the The Ow Valley lies at the base of Wicklow's largest Mountain; Lugnaquilla standing at 925m. Eventually you wind down into The beautiful Glenmalure Valley which is Ireland's longest glacier valley, stretching for over 16km, at the bottom there is the village of Drumgoff, with a famous Inn recalling the life and times of Michael Dwyer, who hid in the valley and fought the crown in 1798 to get an assisted place to Australia. You will spend the night in this valley, either at the Inn or B&Bs nearby.
Ascent from Moyne: 1040m Descent via the Wicklow Way: 1121m

Day 4 : Glenmalure To Glendalough/Laragh. From 17 Km/10.5 Miles Approx 4-6 Hours Walking Depending On Which Option You Take.

Location: Glenmalure

Accommodation Name: Guesthouse

Meals Included: Breakfast

Probably the most spectacular day. The trail takes you steadily up out of the valley and as you climb, the beauty of the surrounding countryside and the famous Glenmalure Waterfall will simply take your breath away. The trail crosses the side of Mullacor Mountain and then there are 3 possible routes down into the valley of Glendalough which has lakes. Two of the options take you away from the Wicklow Way to discover the valley edge views from an area called The Spinc. From here there are wooden walkways down to the old miner's village at the Upper Lake. Whichever route you take, eventually you reach Glendalough famous for its 6th century Monastic Settlement with pencil like Roundtowers, which you will be able to visit on your way. You will stay near Glendalough, usually in the village of Laragh.
Basic Ascent: 450m
If you do the full mines walk. Ascent: 1150m Descent: 1100m

Day 5 : Oldbridge To Enniskerry. From 22 Km/13.6 Miles Approx 4-6 Hours Walking (Approx)*

Location: Oldbridge

Accommodation Name: Guesthouse

Meals Included: Breakfast

The beauty of the walk does not let up. From Glendalough/Laragh you can either walk direct (note that the distance in this case is 28.6km /17.7miles) or there is a short optional transfer to Oldbridge for a short cut from where you head up around two more lakes, Loughs Dan and Tay, gradually climbing out of forest with potentially good views as you come over White Hill 635m. Then there is the option to climb Djouce Hill (733m). The trail then descends off the high moors passing the Powerscourt waterfall and into the attractive Crone Woods. From here walk towards Enniskerry, our B&Bs are scattered in this rural area.
*Please note that our normal accommodation near Enniskerry is 3km off route, this is reflected in the distances quoted. One of the longest walks but a classic. Enniskerry is situated on the doorstep of Dublin.

Your trip finishes on a splendid trail that leads you into Marlay Park, from where buses or taxis can take you into central Dublin for an evening of celebration having completed the route Ascent: 960m Descent: 1046ft

  • Trip Grading & Preparation

Match your level of fitness & requirements Please read this information carefully to find out which grade is most suited to your level of fitness and requirements. To make the most of your Walkers' Britain holiday it is essential and your responsibility to choose a trip that is well within your capabilities. All our active holidays are graded and clearly marked in each trip description. All mountains have uphill and downhill sections and by definition walking and cycling demand some effort. However all things are relative, and these grades assume that you are a reasonably active person who enjoys walking or cycling. Few trips are extreme and most allow ample time for sightseeing and enjoying the scenery. If in doubt about the grade of any holiday, please contact us for advice or request the tour dossiers, you can also chat with our team about the right travel insurance for you. Grade 1 – Introductory These trips involve walking for four to five hours per day or cycling for 15-50 km per day at a slow but steady pace. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health. Suggested Preparation 30 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (either road cycling or jogging), three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 2 – Introductory to Moderate These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity but including several moderate stages. Grade 3 – Moderate These adventures involve walking for up to six hours per day or cycling for up to 65 km per day, at a steady pace. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. Suggested Preparation 45 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (road cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 4 – Moderate to Challenging This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity but including several challenging stages. Grade 5 – Challenging These active holidays involve walking up to nine hours per day in mountainous terrain with steep ascents and descents, pass crossing & alpine weather conditions, or cycling for up to 80 km per day over undulating terrain, with some steep and sustained hills. You will need an excellent level of fitness, be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kg and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions. Suggested Preparation 1 hour of aerobic-type exercise five times a week for three to six months leading up to your trip. We also recommend regular hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions or road cycling.

  • Route notes

While our tours vary in terms of difficulty, route finding is made simple and convenient with our specially prepared package of maps and route notes. On many of the walks it is easy enough to navigate carefully using the route notes provided with a cursory glance at the map. As holidays reach the higher grades, you will need to take more care and we would expect you to have at least some knowledge of using a compass. Maps for our tours also vary considerably, from up-to-date GPS referenced additions, to old map copies which may still be the only ones obtainable for a particular area. The differences in style, grade and destinations of our tours are features that make them of continual interest and delight to our walkers & cyclists. Each set of route notes can contain the following elements relevant to the route: History and information on the region and the route you are walking. Detailed maps including points of interest and accommodation. Detailed step-by-step descriptions (with pictures) of the route and information on detours/optional additions. Transport timetables and information for getting there and away. Safety information and advice. Contact details of accommodation, transport, local representatives and emergency support. Advice for things to do along the way. Suggestions for dining and self catering.

  • How our self-guided holidays work

Self guided walking and cycling holidays offer freedom, independence and choice, allowing you to tailor your holidays in the UK & Europe to your interest and travel style. Our detailed Route Notes will contain all of the information you need to plan how you would like to approach each day, giving you the freedom to set your own pace. As you are not limited by the constraints of group travel, you are free to shorten or lengthen your walk as the terrain permits and can even take a day off, although you may need to travel onto your next accommodation by taxi or public transport in order to do so.

The Wicklow Way - 7 Days

5 Jun 2024

Walking from inn to inn was epic and it was really nice to end in Dublin. The logistics were seamless. My only criticism is that one of the days was spent walking through a large clear cut area, which was interesting but not especially beautiful.

The pictures we took during our trip does not do the landscapes of Ireland any justice! The rolling hills and the lush greenery are a sight to behold that soothes the soul. 10/10 would recommend this trip to all my friends and family who are looking to experience some of the best that Ireland has to offer!

The Wicklow Way - 7 Days

24 Sep 2019

We had excellent weather in our 5 days of walking on the Wicklow Way. The scenery was outstanding , as were the arrangements put in place by Nathalie Thompson, our consultant. We stayed in local pubs/hotels rather than B and Bs as we prefer the greater flexibility that such accommodation provides. All the hotels and the travel arrangements involving bag pick ups were great. We have worked with the team before and intend on working with them again.

The Wicklow Way - 7 Days

15 Jul 2019

We were so happy with our experience as we traveled the 7-day of the Wicklow Way. Our trip had an exciting start as we boarded the bus from the airport in Dublin, made it to the train station and then quickly jumped on our train. The team in Ireland were able to pick us up right as we got off the train and took us to our first stop in Tinahely. Being warmly greeted with coffee and scones at Madeline's B&B after a long day was wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our B&B's! The hosts were lovely and the food was always the best way to start the day! Our hiking adventure through Ireland was beautiful as most days were quiet on the trail but led us to magnificent views! Most days also allowed us to meet other hikers who were happy to stop for a moment, ask where we were going and tell us how long to the next stop. My husband used the map provided to guide us on the trail and found it very helpful. We could not be more pleased with our trip. Our legs are tired but it was all worth seeing the beautiful sites of the Wicklow Way.

The Wicklow Way - 7 Days

06 Apr 2019

This was a very pretty walk through the Irish countryside, though much of it was on some sort of road (paved lanes, forest service roads, etc.) rather than trails. I experienced early March Irish weather (rain, fog, hail, snow, wind and sunshine with rainbows) that was fun because I was equipped for it. I met some local walkers and learned more about the area. Learning about local politics over a pint was a highlight.

The Wicklow Way - 7 Days

7 Sep 2022

If you want to meet people and you love to hike/walk the Wicklow Way is for you. The bed and breakfasts and hotels were all wonderful in their own ways. Good food, friendly owners and a great way to meet other guests. The hike we did was 5 days and there were 3 wonderful, picturesque days. At other times we were in forest or logged out areas that were not that interesting. There aren't any bathrooms or places to stop to refill your water. Make sure you have a good map too because some of the signage is hidden behind foliage.
