Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1 : Arrive Beaune
Location: Beaune
Accommodation Name: 3* hotel in Beaune
The first night is spent in a charming 3-star hotel in the historic area of Beaune, nestled in a beautiful stone building that was once a 16th-century convent. The well-designed rooms feature a modern, warm decor and include amenities like air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and an en-suite bathroom with both a shower and bathtub. After your day, you can unwind with a refreshing drink in the hotel’s inviting lounge. Numerous restaurants are conveniently located nearby.
Upgrade Option: Hotel de la Poste - 4* This chic establishment has been renovated preserving the character of the building and a perfect balance has been found between the charm of past times and the comfort of today. Dinners (not included) can be taken in its refined restaurant or in the garden in fine weather.
Day 2 : Sightseeing & Afternoon Walk To Meursault 11.5 Km/7 Miles, 3H, +290M/-235M
Location: Beaune
Accommodation Name: 2* hotel in Meursault
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
The village of Meursault is 10 km / 6.2 miles southwest of Beaune in the middle of the vineyards. The virtually flat walk is easily done in 4 hours including a stop over at the café in the famous village of Pommard. We have designed this short first day in order to have time to visit the Hospices de Beaune and perhaps have an early lunch in Beaune before setting off to Meursault.
Accommodation: For two nights, unpack your bags and make yourself at home in this comfortable 2-star hotel on the outskirts of the pretty village of Meursault. It is reputedly the centre of the best chardonnay production in Burgundy and is therefore the best place to do a little tasting to introduce yourself to the produce of the land! On one night in Meursault, dinner will be taken at the hotel. The second night is on a bed & breakfast basis. Upgrade Option: Le Globe, in the heart of the village. This contemporary hotel, housed in a traditional Burgundy building, is renowned for its gourmet cuisine (dinners not included).
Day 3 : Circular Walk - 16 Km/10 Miles, 4H, +480M/-480M
Location: Saint Romain
Accommodation Name: 2* hotel in Meursault
Meals Included: Breakfast
The standard walk from here is a 16 km / 10 mile loop to the beautiful village of Saint Romain. The ruins of the chateau include Roman foundations and the XII century church was an old ‘prieuré’ or small monastery. The restaurant in the village provides the best lunch break. There is approx. 220m of ascent and descent during the day but nothing too steep or demanding; there is plenty of time to take the walking at a gentle pace.
Day 4 : Meursault To Nolay 17.5 Km/10.8 Miles, 4.5 H, +532M/-445M
Location: Nolay
Accommodation Name: 2* hotel in Nolay
Meals Included: Breakfast
Today leave the vineyards and after a steady climb of 140m, meet the GR76 and walk in the shade of the typical oak forests of Burgundy. Coming out of the woods, see the village of La Rochepot with the stunning château of the same name. There is a good local restaurant in the village although the chateau is currently closed. From La Rochepot, follow the GR7 before descending to the old market town of Nolay.
Accommodation: A 2* hotel on the old market square in Nolay provides a convenient nights stop on the route.
Day 5 : Rully 21 Km/13 Miles, 6H Or To Chassey Le Camp 17 Km /10.5 Miles, 4.5 H
Location: Rully
Accommodation Name: hotel in Rully
Meals Included: Breakfast
Over the first 6 km, gradually ascend 200m through lovely pastures shared with the Charolais cows, (of which Burgundy is very proud). Once on top of the ridge and before going down to the village of Santenay, there are wide reaching views of the Saone plain with the Alps in the distance. Then follow the GR7, walk across the Canal du Centre, walk up and down the Hermitage Mountain before descending through the vineyards of Rully or up to Chassey le Camp.
Accommodation: Our hotel is on the main square, this time in the typical vineyard village of Rully. Rully will be our base to explore what is called here the Côtes Chalonaises. No doubt wine tasting will be a possibility! Bed & Breakfast only.
Upgrade Option: Auberge du Camp Romain a 3* hotel with spa and swimming pool in Chassey le Camp. This is approximately 4 km from Rully. Dinner is included both nights in this case
Day 6 : Circular Walk From Either Rully Or Chassey Le Camp
Location: Côte Chalonnaise
Accommodation Name: hotel in Rully
Meals Included: Breakfast
From Rully - 14 km / 8.6 miles or 17 km / 10.5 miles, 5 hours +452m/-452m
From Chassey le Camp - 16 km / 10 miles or 19 km / 11.8 miles, 4 - 5hours
A very pretty walk on the Côte Chalonnaise. There is a mixture of vineyard, field and forest walking. You could visit any ‘Caves’ wine cellars that you find open en route, but as long as you are not too late back for dinner, you can normally visit one in Rully from where it is not so hard to stagger back to Chassey le Camp! Clockwise loop to the villages of Mercurey, Rully and Nantoux. A very pretty walk on the Côte Chalonnaise.
Day 7 : Arrangements End

Trip Grading & Preparation
Match your level of fitness & requirements Please read this information carefully to find out which grade is most suited to your level of fitness and requirements. To make the most of your Walkers' Britain holiday it is essential and your responsibility to choose a trip that is well within your capabilities. All our active holidays are graded and clearly marked in each trip description. All mountains have uphill and downhill sections and by definition walking and cycling demand some effort. However all things are relative, and these grades assume that you are a reasonably active person who enjoys walking or cycling. Few trips are extreme and most allow ample time for sightseeing and enjoying the scenery. If in doubt about the grade of any holiday, please contact us for advice or request the tour dossiers, you can also chat with our team about the right travel insurance for you. Grade 1 – Introductory These trips involve walking for four to five hours per day or cycling for 15-50 km per day at a slow but steady pace. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health. Suggested Preparation 30 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (either road cycling or jogging), three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 2 – Introductory to Moderate These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity but including several moderate stages. Grade 3 – Moderate These adventures involve walking for up to six hours per day or cycling for up to 65 km per day, at a steady pace. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. Suggested Preparation 45 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (road cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 4 – Moderate to Challenging This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity but including several challenging stages. Grade 5 – Challenging These active holidays involve walking up to nine hours per day in mountainous terrain with steep ascents and descents, pass crossing & alpine weather conditions, or cycling for up to 80 km per day over undulating terrain, with some steep and sustained hills. You will need an excellent level of fitness, be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kg and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions. Suggested Preparation 1 hour of aerobic-type exercise five times a week for three to six months leading up to your trip. We also recommend regular hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions or road cycling.

Route notes
While our tours vary in terms of difficulty, route finding is made simple and convenient with our specially prepared package of maps and route notes. On many of the walks it is easy enough to navigate carefully using the route notes provided with a cursory glance at the map. As holidays reach the higher grades, you will need to take more care and we would expect you to have at least some knowledge of using a compass. Maps for our tours also vary considerably, from up-to-date GPS referenced additions, to old map copies which may still be the only ones obtainable for a particular area. The differences in style, grade and destinations of our tours are features that make them of continual interest and delight to our walkers & cyclists. Each set of route notes can contain the following elements relevant to the route: History and information on the region and the route you are walking. Detailed maps including points of interest and accommodation. Detailed step-by-step descriptions (with pictures) of the route and information on detours/optional additions. Transport timetables and information for getting there and away. Safety information and advice. Contact details of accommodation, transport, local representatives and emergency support. Advice for things to do along the way. Suggestions for dining and self catering.
