The trail is well-marked with official signs of the Via Francigena. A good level of fitness is required.
As with all of our trips it is important that you are well prepared. We suggest that you undertake regular exercise – swimming, cycling, and jogging, two to three times a week for three months prior to your departure.

Via Francigena: Lucca to Siena

This walk was slightly more challenging than expected (the hills!) but still really enjoyed it all. The scenery was fabulous and the trails were very quiet. The accommodation was varied but all very good.

We had a fantastic walk through Tuscany with UTracks, although it was a bit more challenging than expected. Luggage transfer worked to perfection as did the app and guide notes. Also the staff in the office were always helpful and responsive. The accommodation was more than adequate and breakfasts were great. Would definitely recommend.

Walking starts from San Miniato. Each day different landscape and each overnight stay had its own character. Trail well marked and no luggage problems.

I was really happy with the pre-planning, which was thorough and met my requirements. The app is super, too, with its bespoke maps and instructions, so I always felt confident that I knew where I was and where I should go.

Wonderful to be able to walk amongst the vines and olive trees of Tuscany and feel the country. Suggest add swimmers and travel towel to packing list so might swim in the streams along the walks. Being able to swim and enjoy a cocktail by the pool at the accommodation places is also a delight after a hot day walking.

It was an excellent way to see the less popular towns in Italy. Absolutely stunning meandering through the vineyards and olive groves of Tuscany. Some stages of the walk were challenging, mainly due to the rain, or the other extreme the heat but so worth the experience. The accommodation was great and satisfying breakfasts. GPS was user friendly & informative of the places of interest on route. Highly recommend to do it!

10 Sep 2018

This was an absolutely wonderful trip. The organisation was excellent, accommodation much better than we have experienced on similar trips with other providers, and the route notes largely very reliable. The walk through the beautiful Tuscan landscape is really quite exceptional- rows of Cyprus trees, fields of sunflowers, vineyards and olive groves. We really loved the trip and would strongly recommend it to others who want a comfortable walking experience and a most enjoyable cultural trip in one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited.

Via Francigena: Lucca to Siena

17 Sep 2024

We have had much better walks in the Pyrenees. Supposedly an 8 day trip but only 5 days of walking. Some days on roads for quite a long time. Typical Tuscan countryside, nothing spectacular or scenic. First day had little shade and was long in the heat. For the most part the rooms allocated to us were generally not the best in the hotel but were serviceable. Breakfast generally good. Unless you have romantic or religious reasons to do this walk best to walk elsewhere.
