The trails through the vineyards can be slippery, muddy and heavy-going when wet or after it has rained. The trails do not always have markings. The accent is on keeping a steady pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos. You will need a good level of fitness to participate fully in this adventure.

Piedmont: Land of Barolo and Barbera

04 Jul 2024

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our walk in Piemonte through the Barolo area arranged by UTracks. First off, the response we received from UTracks for any question we had was almost immediate. The hotels/agriturismos chosen were excellent. Each was clean and comfy with great breakfasts (and dinners). Nearly all had swimming pools. Some of our rooms had outstanding views of the Alps or local countryside. Most of the time is spent walking through vineyards or orchards, very little on paved roads. One of the best features is the app provided. You can't get far off track before the app alerts you (if used correctly). I would encourage anyone on this walk to work with the app until it is completely understood. Once you understand it you appreciate how helpful it is. We met lovely people along the way including the hoteliers (who were just wonderful). The baggage service was seamless. All in all a well organized journey. UTracks exceeded our expectations. We are already sifting through UTracks' website for ideas for our next walk.

Accommodation was exceptional. Walking notes provided were very detailed and much needed because few hikers were on the trails. Each day's walk was well planned in regards to timing, scenery and towns visited. A wonderful experience. You did not disappoint!

It was an an excellent well supported walk. We were lucky with weather. The accommodation was generally v good with v friendly hosts and good meals. A few suggestions: The distances were always about 2-3 km more than advised The grade for >65yos more often 3 than 2. Quite steep climbs. After rain it was at times v slippery. Poles v helpful If evening meal not provided it would be helpful to have it pre-arranged elsewhere as options sometimes v limited. Definitely recommend it to others

We have just returned from this excellent self-guided walk. The route though Italian countryside... walking from a picturesque medieval castle town to the next picturesque medieval castle town across Piedmont is stunning. The accommodation was great too, the agriturismos and hotels were all a very good standard, some with swimming pools. In particular, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Food at every overnight stop we found excellent, and in a few places the food and wine was outstanding, especially for the money. A lovely showcase for the gastronomy and wines of the region... delicious. On the walk, the waymarking is good, with clear red and white fingerposts, or Bar-to-Bar signs, easy to spot. The supplied maps and route instructions were comprehensive and accurate, and the ActiveNav app route you supplied was genius... giving us an exact GPS position overlaid on our exact route for those times when a double check was required. With that app, it was impossible to take a wrong turn for long! Finally, all of the logistic arrangements (reservations, baggage transfer, taxis etc) worked faultlessly. So, well done UTracks and your team, this was a well organised and enjoyable trip, and we will not hesitate to recommend it. Our thanks go to all of you.

The trek in Piedmont was excellent. The organisation was very smooth - all the accommodation was very good and the navigation guides were accurate. The countryside was very attractive with lots of variation and the paths had very few other walkers in early October.

This trip was so much fun! Even in the pouring rain and deep clay mud of the vineyards. The sites were fascinating, and the trail east to follow. Accommodations were top, wine was amazing and folks all very friendly.

We had a brilliant holiday. We had never heard of them before, but would really recommend them. At every stage, from booking, to communication and information and then accommodation and transport, everything was well organised and high quality. Walking notes were detailed and accurate, the app was really useful, the places we stayed were beautiful, our rooms were comfortable and attractive and breakfasts were good, especially at the family-owned agri-tourism business in Vergne. Our only concern was that some of the walking days were quite long and didn't offer much shade, and temperatures, even in September, were in the low 30s by midday. Surprisingly, the accommodations' earliest breakfast start was 8.00am. It would have really helped if this had been 7.00am or earlier so that we could have made earlier starts on the walks. Offers of packed lunches, or a little more detail on places to eat en route might also have been helpful.

3 Oct 2023

We found the distances much more manageable for us (having just completed a more arduous French Camino walk). It took us 1 hour to do the first 300 metres as we were so excited to take photos of everything. We loved stopping for morning tea and lunch along the way. Even on our only rainy morning, we were excited to take shelter in a grape pickers hut along the way and watch the lightning over the vineyards.

Piedmont area fantastic for walking and the company kept us off roads and in vineyards orchards and wilderness nearly the whole time. The maps on the app were problematic and chewed phone battery too quickly. You need to take a portable power pack in your back pack to recharge during the day.
