Tour Overview

The compact cities of Munich and Salzburg are firmly entrenched on the must-see list for travellers to Europe. Between these historic centres are the dramatic Bavarian Alps which overlook the deep lakes and forests which characterise the landscapes of Bavaria, one of Germany's most popular regions for travellers. Taking a combination of quiet roads and dedicated cycle routes, this inspiring journey by bike will captivate the senses as you pass by castles, colourful markets and spa towns by day and stay in comfortable hotels with local charm at night. There is ample time to take a boat ride, swim in the lakes, visit museums and wander through the magnificent gardens of Herrenchiemsee as you journey between picturesque towns. Reaching Salzburg via the German Alpine Road and Saalach River is a fitting end to the journey.

Highlights

  • Cycling through the Bavarian Lakes area with incredible views

Itinerary

Expand All

Day 1 : Arrive Munich

Located on the Isar River and to the north of the Bavarian Alps, Munich is the third largest city in Germany and the capital of Bavaria. Home to the Oktoberfest, the historic centre is filled with buildings of interest. We recommend you take a walk around town and perhaps visit a beer garden for a “Radlermass” (a glass of beer and lemonade). Later at the hotel there will be a welcome briefing and bike fitting.

Day 2 : Cycle The Isar Cycle Path To Bad Tölz (60Km/37Mi)

The Isar cycle path will take you through green forests, via Wolfratshausen and Geretsried, to Bad Tölz. Located at the crossroads of two trade routes - the River Isar and the old salt route from Reichenhall to Allgäu - Bad Tölz quickly became a thriving trading centre and the ornate mansions testify to its golden age. The Tölzer Market Street is worth visiting - it was the location for the famous (German) television series “Der Bulle von Tölz”. Overnight in Bad Tölz.

Day 3 : Visit Lake Tegernsee And Continue To Lake Schliersee (35Km/21.5Mi)

Today's route leads through the scenic landscape of Lake Tegernsee, over gently rolling hills, to Lake Tegernsee. In Gmund you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the lake. We recommend taking a boat trip or going for a swim! Later, you will continue on the Bodensee-Königssee bike path to Lake Schliersee, where you stay overnight.

Day 4 : Cycle Rolling Hills En Route To Bad Feilnbach (35Km/21.5Mi)

Initially this morning you will follow the lake shore and cycle slightly hilly roads to Bad Feilnbach, a colourfully decorated town. Because of the mild climate and more than 30,000 fruit trees, the moor spa area is also called the “Bavarian Merano". Overnight Bad Feilnbach.

Day 5 : Visit The Ship Building Town Of Neubeuern En Route To Lake Chiemsee (35-50Km/22-31Mi)

Today you cycle through the largest peat mining area of Bavaria, the Kollerfilze, and soon you will reach Neubeuern. Throughout the town you will see two crossed ship hooks, the emblem of Neubeuern and a sign of the shipbuilding industry, which was once the residents’ main source of income. Continue cycling via Frasdorf at the foot of the Chiemgau Mountains to Lake Chiemsee, located on the southern lake shore of the “Bavarian sea”. We recommend taking a boat trip to the islands Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee. Overnight at Lake Chiemsee.

Day 6 : Cycle Along The River Traun To Inzell (30-45Km/19-28Mi)

The mountains are getting higher however the bike path stays almost flat. You will cycle through the “Bergener Moos” at the foot of Mount Hochfelln (1,674 metres), via Bad Adelholzen (healing spring), to Siegsdorf (natural history museum). From there, the path continues along the river Rote Traun to the idyllic town of Inzell. The famous Lüftlmalerei paintings on the beautifully decorated town houses are typical of this health resort town. Overnight in Inzell.

Day 7 : A Scenic Route Across The Austrian Border To Salzburg (50Km/31Mi)

Today’s stage follows narrow paths between the mountains, along the German Alpine Road via Schneitzlreuth and along the river Saalach to Bad Reichenhall , where you can visit the saline building, cathedral St Zeno and the spa park. Continue across the border between Bavaria and Austria to the beautiful town of Salzburg.

Accommodation

7 nights 3-4 star hotels
In Germany & Austria note that a twin room is not always associated with having two beds! Quite often a twin bed has one or two mattresses on the same bed frame but with two separate duvets. Sometimes there might be two beds positioned together, but they cannot be separated because of constraints of the room. Please accept our apologies for this, but having inspected many hotel rooms, there are not many twin rooms which have two separated beds, except in more modern or international style hotels.

Grading

The trip is graded moderate. The recommended route involves a total distance of 300kms, with daily distances of between 30 and 60km/21.5 and 37mi on paved roads. In general, the terrain ranges from easy to hilly. Especially the stages from Bad Tolz to Bad Feilenbach, there are some ascents. You will find yourself partly on bicycle paths, and mostly on service roads and minor roads. Only some short sections have to be cycled on roads with more traffic. We recommend pre trip training involving cycling on light to medium traffic roads to ensure you are comfortable cycling through towns.

What You Carry

During the cycle day you will carry your daily requirements in the pannier provided with the bike. This may include your lunch, wet weather gear, mobile phone and water. A small daypack which can be kept inside the pannier is useful for sightseeing.

The terrain was varied, great trails, nice country roads, some steep hills, beautiful countryside when weather improved, some detours because of construction, accommodations were very good, the best part were the people we met along the way.
