Tour Overview

Three of Britain’s best known contemporary artists were born and raised in Yorkshire – sculptor and artist Henry Moore in Castleford, sculptor Dame Barbara Hepworth in Wakefield and pop artist David Hockney in Bradford. Today the county is home to some of the most important collections of their works in a series of excellent art galleries in Leeds, where Moore and Hepworth studied, Wakefield and Bradford. Join host and guide, History of Art PHD graduate, Maddie Hewitson to discover more.

Your host and guide:
Madeline Hewitson is a research associate in the History of Art department at the University of York where she also completed her PhD. Maddie specialises in British art post-1850 and has contributed to a number of British art exhibitions at museums such as the Hepworth Wakefield, York Art Gallery and Nunnington Hall. She is an active researcher in addition to lecturing and teaching across the UK, as well as co-managing the Travel Editions’ 20th Century Art in Yorkshire tours for the past 6 years.

The hotel was OK but the two suppers were awful. Horrible "Bisto" gravy over both meals and really badly cooked not worthy of a four star hotel The tour itself was excellent and the Tour guide really expanded my knowledge was enthusiastic and kind to everyone . She not only answered every question in depth but made it all enjoyable

Gerald was superb as host, tour manager. His knowledge is outstanding, and he gave unstinted time with us while guiding us around each of the venues. I believe he has suggested that Cartwright Hall be taken out of the tour. I fully agree with this as the venue, although suitable for school visits, it lacks 'adult friendly' facilities. more time in Salts Mill and Leeds would be good.

This was an excellent holiday all the trips and the talks were very good and I enjoyed it very much. The only criticism I have was for the food in the hotel. The breakfast was ok, but the evening meals were very poor. The meat was very tough and difficult to cut and eat. There was no choice and I was pleased that on my extra night I could go out to eat somewhere different. The staff in the restaurant were good, friendly and worked very hard, it just was that the food was not good quality.
