After lunch (own expense) we drive to the picturesque town of Chipping Camden where we visit the Ernest Wilson Memorial Garden. Ernest Wilson was probably the greatest plant collector of the early 20th century.  He discovered and introduced over 1200 new species of trees and shrubs to Britain including the Pocket-handkerchief tree and the Paper-bark maple. He was born in Chipping Campden hence the Memorial Garden which is planted solely with trees and shrubs he introduced. Our final stop of the day is to St. James’ Churchyard in Chipping Campden, which has an avenue of lime trees known as the 12 apostles. They were planted in 1770 and have been pollarded into amazing shapes.

Day 3: Harcourt Arboretum And The University Of Oxford Botanic Garden

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Established in 1835 by the Harcourt family, Harcourt Arboretum is now managed by the University of Oxford Botanic Garden. Here there are trees and shrubs from all corners of the temperate world, including Giant Redwoods from North America, Magnolias from the Himalayas, the rare Golden Larch from China and the South American Lantern tree. We have time in Oxford for lunch (own expense) before visiting the Oxford Botanic Garden, the oldest botanic garden in Britain. Founded in 1621, it has a spectacular collection of trees and shrubs including South American Monkey puzzles, the largest Black pine in England and a superb collection of rowans including the Chinese rowan, Sorbus sargentiana. Couple with this a palm house, bog gardens and walled gardens and this makes a wonderful afternoon tour.

Here North American oaks stand proudly alongside rare Himalayan pines in a beautiful setting. Our final visit is to the Tortworth Chestnut in a nearby churchyard.  A magnificent old tree which some believe dates back to the time of the Romans and one which was recently nominated as one of the nation’s favourite trees. After time for lunch (own expense) we make our final visit of the tour to Bristol Botanic Gardens which boasts an impressive tree collection, featuring a diverse range of species from around the world. A Secret War Tour beyond Outstanding! I have been on many, many battlefield tours over the years but this Secret War Tour with Travel Editions was truly outstanding. Well ahead of the rest and then some. I thought I knew what to expect but my expectations were greatly exceeded. Why? Because everything about it reeked of quality. We stayed in a superb hotel half board, had a comfortable coach with a superb driver, thank you, Oskar! And the tour guide was superb, warm, friendly and highly professional (am I allowed to mention your name, Yvonne?). The guest speakers were the very best available, bar none, and the locations visited left one with a feeling of awe and wonderment. They just could not have been better. So much was packed into the programme that it took me four days to recover! This was a Secret War Tour beyond expectations and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Travel Editions!

My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions. She's always rated this company and has encouraged her friends to also book with them. However, her trip to The Netherlands was cancelled because of Covid 19. I accept that this is not the fault of the company but the way they've dealt with my mother is appalling. They accept that she is due a full refund of the money she's paid and that it is their legal obligation to do so. However, the Managing Director, Ed Coventry has made it clear he intends to break the law and is refusing to refund my mother. Please note, this company is still taking bookings and deposits from new customers on their website and it seems to be the case that if the holiday cancels because of Covid 19, they refuse to return your deposit even though you should be refunded.

Breaking the law. I would like to echo the remarks made by other recent reviews, (see review "My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions") This company has broken the law, its contractual obligations, and its word, by refusing to make refunds for cancelled tours until March 2021. It is therefore not to be trusted. I am hoping that the recent ruling against TUI will make them change their minds but I doubt it.
