Art & Architecture of Ravenna and Bologna Tour

07-April-2022

It was an excellent tour, if even a little more packed than I had expected. The day in Bologna was good but very long, partly due ,I believe, to various things not being open so we had to retrace our steps at times. The lecture that evening had to be postponed to Saturday after seeing the mosaics which was not ideal. I'm not sure how that could be improved. Barbara was a star and Claire very well informed. Occasionally we were rushed from one site to another without time for buying postcards etc although the shop had been recommended. Everything essential was fitted into the 3 days but I think we would all have liked a little more time to look around and see other things as we passed by. If you feel it is useful, a comment to BA or LHR about the chaotic landing arrangements would be very relevant. The tour was busy, as I'd expected and the delay didn't help us getting home late on a Sunday night.

The dedication, energy, enthusiasm and people skills of the tour manager were outstanding. The hotel room while just right for single occupancy would have been too small for two. Also there was no cupboard space. Overall - an enjoyable trip.

Clare is one of the best guides I have ever had on an art history tour. Her knowledge was extremely wide ranging. Her enthusiasm and erudition make her a brilliant teacher with a thorough command of her subject and ability to pitch to her audience. Meanwhile, Tessa was an excellent tour manager with arrangements running seamlessly. Together they gave us a wonderful trip.

Clare’s talks were, clear, knowledgeable and fascinating, enhancing the appreciation of the architecture and mosaics. Tessa was superb, full of boundless energy and enthusiasm and always calm and patient. She went out of her way to enable me to limit the amount of walking following surgery. Both of them were such good company and helped to form a friendly group. My criticism is that the programme attempted to fit too much into too short a time. The first day in particular did not give a happy experience of either Bologna or Ravenna and allowed insufficient time to adjust. The second day in Bologna was equally challenging ( not helped by a delayed return journey) when a more relaxing day in Ravenna would have been better. Again Tessa saved with good humour and unflappability.
