Pick up at the hotel to enjoy one of the most incredible tours of Ushuaia; Tierra del Fuego National Park. We invite you to reach the true End of the World to feel the thrill of being in a unique and magical place. All travelers arriving in Ushuaia, cannot leave without knowing the end of the Pan-American route that begins in Alaska and after more than 15 thousand kilometers ends within the Tierra del Fuego National Park. This is the place to take a picture that testify people have truly arrived at the End of the world. Further, just 1000 km away is Antarctica. We will pick you up at the hotel, from where we will go to the Tierra del Fuego National Park, which is located 12 km from the center of the city of Ushuaia. Before entering the National Park, we will stop at the End of the World train station (optional) where passengers who wish may choose to take the mythical train (about 60 minutes ride) that ends within the National Park. Those who do not make the journey on the train can enjoy a small walk in the Fuegian forest (in winter the small walk could be aborted according to weather conditions).
Once the train journey is over, the group will meet again inside the Park with the vehicle and guide to continue with the tour to Ensenada, a bay that combines the Andes, the sub-Antarctic forest and sea in the same place defining an ecosystem unique from Argentina. In this area of the park, native people used to live and their archaeological remains. There is also the last post office in America, where it is sometimes open and we can send postcards to anywhere in the world. (Ensenada bay is closed in winter). We will continue to other panoramic points to make small tours to appreciate the flora and fauna that surprises us with its beauty: Acigami Glacier Lake (Roca) shared with Chile, Lapataia Bay, where the sign indicating that we have reached the end of the Pan American route.
We will enjoy a relaxing catamaran sailing through the historic and challenging Beagle Channel, the cradle of countless historic shipwrecks in these icy waters south of the Strait of Magellan. One of the objectives will be to obtain the typical postcard with the lighthouse behind us.
We sail from the tourist pier along the wide Ushuaia Bay, observing from another perspective the profile of the city of Ushuaia and the geographical distribution at the foot of the Andes Mountains; until reaching the Beagle Channel through the Paso Chico.
There we sail around the Island of the Birds where we appreciate the Fuegian birds such as Skúas, Black-browed Albatross, Steam Ducks, Cauquenes, Cook Gulls and Gray Gulls. We go on around the sea lions’ island where we can see specimens of sea lions with one and two hairs. Both islands belong to the Bridges archipelago.
Upon arriving at the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse (The Illuminators or also the colloquially misnamed the Lighthouse of the End of the World), we will be able to appreciate the colonies of Imperial Cormorants and Rocky Cormorants (similar in appearance to the penguins but of different species); and also listen to the sinking history of the SS Monte Cervantes that happened in 1930.
At the end of the journey, you can be amazed by the view of the mountain range that surrounds the city of Ushuaia and the sumptuous nature that surrounds it. It is a tour of great historical and landscape value that we do, visiting privileged and interesting points throughout the trip, which you can discover by navigating the waters of the Beagle Channel. Is a pleasant and quiet journey.
Day 3 : Escondido & Fagnano Lakes
Location: Ushuaia
Accommodation: Hotel, Standard - 3*
Accommodation Name: Patagonia Jarke or similar
Meals Included: Breakfast
A purely contemplative excursion, the aim is to enjoy the tranquility transmitted by the Fuegian landscape and its southern mountain range.
The tour departs from Ushuaia on National Route No. 3 northbound after picking up passengers at their respective hotels. Once the Beagle Channel is left behind, the first look of the Olivia and Cinco Hermanos mountains is presented. Then the Carbajal valley formed by an immense peatland, which is exploited for commercial purposes.
Following the path you will see on both sides of the route, several valleys where different activities are carried out in winter (such as sledding by Huskies, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling).
Our next stop is the place to visit the Harwen Winter Center, home of the National Snow Sculpture Festival. It is also part of the final stretch of the provincial cross-country ski slopes. There is also the southernmost homemade Gin distillery in the world. We will learn about the production process of this spirit drink that was born in the Middle Ages and we will have the possibility of having a tasting. Next to the distillery there is a small museum where the history of motorcycles of the national industry is exhibited since the 1950s, with the mythical Puma, Tehuelche, Siambretta, etc; and the experiences of the pioneers in long journeys linking the south and north of the continent.
Arriving at the highest point for the crossing of the Andes mountain range in Tierra del Fuego Argentina, we will be in front of the Garibaldi Pass (the only place in the country where crossing the Andes mountain range does not imply crossing a border, we continue crossing the same national territory ). This is a panoramic point with spectacular views of the Escondido and Fagnano Lakes and the old National Route No. 3 in a framework of Patagonian Andean forest, a landscape of breathtaking beauty.
The trip continues to resume the route until passing through the Bronzovich sawmill, active and of important size on the coast of Lake Escondido. Then you will reach Lake Fagnano, where you will descend again to appreciate and understand the enormous magnitude of the lake, one of the largest in South America, with more than 100 km long and 7 km wide.
On the way back to Ushuaia, we will stop at one of the winter centers and have time to have lunch at a typical dish of the area: Fuegian Lamb at the stake. (lunch not included). After dessert, there will be a moment of relaxation and then return to the last 20 km towards Ushuaia, arriving around 4pm.
