This morning, we travel to Trier, Germany’s oldest city. Emperor Augustus founded Trier as a Roman colony in 16 B.C. It then became the favoured residence of several Roman emperors and was even known as ‘Roma Secunda’, the second Rome. The Cathedral of Trier is one of the main sights of the city. It was originally built by Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman Emperor. It is the oldest church in Germany and houses great works of art as well as the Holy Robe, a garment said to be worn by Jesus when he was crucified. In Trier, the festively decorated little wooden huts offer a wide range of Christmas articles including decorations, wooden toys, candles, hand-blown glassware, ceramics, crafts and much more. There are also plenty of tasty treats available such as bratwurst sausages, potato pancakes, sweets, hot tea and ‘glühwein’ to stave off the cold.
This afternoon we travel to the festive market at Bernkastel Kues. The historical half-timbered houses, romantic corners and narrow streets form the most picturesque background for this renowned Christmas Market. The bright glow of the lovingly decorated stands and the special flair of a medieval old town create a magical, dreamy ambience.
Day 3 : Metz & Luxembourg City
Location: Luxembourg, Metz
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: 3-star Ibis Luxembourg Sud
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
We begin the day by heading into France to visit the wonderful Christmas Market at Metz. Metz has a very colourful history, from being visited by the Celts and Romans, to being part of Germany in 1870 and then returning to being a French city after the world wars. The city offers a range of local attractions and historical places such as the Cathedral and Opera house so there is lots to explore. The Christmas Markets at Metz offer some lovely stalls and attractions like the Giant Ferris wheel and magic lantern paths so have a walk around and enjoy the festive season.
Following our visit to Metz we return to spend time in the city of Luxembourg, which plays host to a wonderful Christmas Market on the Place d’ Armes. With thousands of light bulbs decorating the tree-lined streets and squares together with the wonderful Christmas Market plunges the heart of this ancient city into a truly magical and romantic place. Spend time at leisure to visit the Christmas Markets with an overwhelming range of Christmas goods and gifts on offer.
