Sa-wat dee! Welcome to Thailand. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm in Bangkok, Thailand’s bustling capital. Famous for its tuk-tuks, khlong boats and street vendors serving up delicious Thai food, the city will certainly set the tone at the start of your trip. With so much to offer those with time to explore, perhaps arrive a day or two early to experience all that Bangkok has to offer. You could take a riverboat to Chinatown and explore the crowded streets, wander down the tourist mecca of Khao San Road, or indulge in some Thai massage. After the meeting tonight perhaps gather your fellow travellers together and tuck into some world-famous street food.

Optional Activities:
-Bangkok - Grand Palace
-Bangkok - Temple & River of Kings Urban Adventure
-Bangkok - Tuk Tuk Experience Urban Adventure
-Bangkok - Thai Massage

Day 2: Ayutthaya / Overnight Sleeper Train

It’s an early start today, as you take the train to Ayutthaya. The former capital city dates back to the 1300s and is now home to Ayutthaya Historical Park – a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of 425 temple ruins and historical sites. After the train journey, have lunch at a local restaurant that serves popular Thai comfort food, then take a tuk-tuk to the historical park for an afternoon cycle. On your bikes, you’ll tour around the important temples of Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Lokayasutharam, Wat Na Phra Main and more, marvelling at their grandeur. After, check into a day room and take the rest of the afternoon to relax. This evening, take an overnight train to Chiang Mai.

Day 3: Chiang Mai

Location: Chiang Mai

Accommodation: Hotel

After the journey on the overnight train, you’ll have free time to relax and enjoy the city. Options abound in Chiang Mai, from wandering the Old City to visiting some of the 300 temples which dot the local landscape – maybe take a scenic, winding drive up a mountain (around 45 minutes) to one of the country's most stunning temple complexes –Doi Suthep. A 300-step Naga-guarded stairway leads you to the temples, and the climb is well worth the effort. The hypnotic atmosphere of chanting Buddhist monks and sweeping views of the city make this a memorable experience. There are also many Thai cooking schools offering courses for budding chefs, sure to help you impress your friends when you return home. This evening, your leader will provide recommendations for street food dinner spots, giving a taste of local delicacies.

Optional Activities:
-Chiang Mai - Thai cooking course

Day 4: Hilltribe Trek

Location: Hilltribe Trek

Accommodation: Hilltribe Village House

Meals Included: lunch, dinner

This morning, leave Chiang Mai and head to Mae Malai Market, stocking up on fresh snacks to fuel today’s trek. Your destination is a local hilltribe village, which provides a special opportunity to experience rural Thai life firsthand. Wander along the mountain ridge, taking in the views of the surrounding natural forests. Pause for a packed lunch in Huey Nam Dang National Park, then continue to meet your hosts in the village. Tonight, you’ll experience a local home-cooked dinner by the campfire, followed by a walk around the village to chat with the locals and learn more about their day-to-day life here.

Included Activities:
-Hilltribe Trek

Day 5: Kayaking Mae Teang River

Location: Kayaking Mae Teang River

Get set for an action-packed day on the water. Make your way to the Mae Taeng River, where you’ll go for a glide on an inflatable kayak. Paddle through lush jungle, stopping to pick fruit and watching for local wildlife. Lunch will be at a special riverside campsite. You’ll then have the chance to test your kayaking skills with an optional whitewater rafting experience. Later, arrive at your accommodation – a boutique camp located in the heart of the Mae Tamaan Valley. Relax after a day of kayaking, and then enjoy a dinner at the campground.

-Chiang Mai - Kayaking day trip on Mae Teang River

Optional Activities:
-Mae Taeng - Whitewater Rafting

Day 6: Chiang Mai

Location: Chiang Mai

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch, dinner

Saddle up this morning with a ride to the gigantic temple of Wat Ban Den, where you’ll discover the beautiful temple art and architecture of modern Lanna temple buildings. Each of the 12 chedis here are dedicated to one of the 12 animals of the Thai zodiac, and Buddhists from all over Thailand make the pilgrimage to this special temple, which gives you panoramic views of the valley. Take a lunch break and refresh, then continue cycling to the ‘sticky waterfall’, Nam Tok Buatong. Hidden in the lush green forest of Bua Tong Waterfall National Park, the waterfall gets its name from the porous limestone that’s surprisingly easy to climb on. Today, you’ll cycle though teakwood plantations, with teak being one of the most economic logging industries in Thailand. Spend some time relaxing at the waterfall before continuing to Pa Sak Ngam (translating to ‘beautiful teak forest’) on the local track. Stop at Mae Guang Tara Reservoir at the viewpoint for some more sweeping views, then head back to your accommodation for the night.

Included Activities:
-Chiang Mai - Cycling

Day 7: Baan Luang Nue / Chiang Mai

Location: Baan Luang Nue / Chiang Mai

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch

After breakfast, cycle to Baan Luang Nue. This village is home to a Tai Lue community – an ethnic group from Xixuangbanna that has held onto its traditional customs and practices. Learn about the village’s culture as you’re shown around a Tai Lue house and a rice storage facility, which has been transformed into a museum. Try your hand at rice smashing or collect fresh duck eggs from the field (depending on availability), then enjoy a home-cooked meal for lunch. Cycle back to Chiang Mai in the afternoon, then spend the evening however you like. You might decide to relax after the day’s efforts, or toast to your final night in Thailand at a local bar – your leader always has the best recommendations.

Included Activities:
-Baan Luang Nue community visit
-Cycling to Baan Luang Nue

Day 8: Chiang Mai

Location: Chiang Mai

There are no activities planned for the final day and you can depart the accommodation at any time. If you are staying in Chiang Mai, why not join an Urban Adventure and allow yourself to be spirited away on an early morning tour that puts you at the epicentre of Buddhist rituals. Learn to meditate, offer alms to monks and make an offering at a temple. If you’re feeling active, you might want to saddle up for a half day cycling trip. Enjoy a pleasant ride along the green banks of the Ping River and stop at a former leper colony turned rehabilitation centre. Continue along various fruit orchards, cycling down small country roads and meandering around the villages on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. Here you’ll discover the real rural Thailand and encounter the Thai way of life. Explore the temple ruins of Wiang Kum Kam, the former capital of Lanna, before you cycle back to Chiang Mai. Just leaving a review to share how much I enjoyed my Central America trip. I thought the guide, Aura was so knowledgeable and organised and clearly a great ambassador for Intrepid. She gave us lots of information on each region, helped us organise anything we needed and dealt with queries from passengers very well and diplomatically. She made the trip run smoothly. She was also keen to explain the Intrepid vision and how the company values making a difference to locals and is a credit to your company. I did Guatemala and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it - very fast paced, lots to see and do and a great overview of the region. I would definitely recommend 👍

I just completed my first Intrepid tour which was 33 days travelling around Central America - I had the time of my life! It was great to have the benefit of a guide (Fluffy was amazing!) and be able to ask questions at any point, but I also liked the freedom that you were permitted throughout. The group tour made boarder crossings seamless and the whole process felt easy - there was never one hiccup. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe throughout, and I cannot recommend Central America enough - the people, the food, the sun and the activities were just amazing :) Can't wait to book my next adventure soon!

I have just come back home after doing Intrepid's 10-day Vietnam Express Northbound tour. What a SUPERB tour. We saw lots and did lots, it was jam-packed full of sights and activities. Our tour leader, Tam, was the best ever. Very knowledgeable, organised and lots of fun too. The other 10 people on the group were all lovely. The places we visited were very interesting. We even visited local homes and ate just like the local people do. I highly recommend Intrepid to anyone considering touring a new country. This was my 5th tour with them and they have consistently been fantastic.

I have travelled with Intrepid a number of times now and can't recommend them enough. The trips are always exciting, full of history and immersive in the culture and environment. The office staff are great too and always happy to help with any questions you might have. Everywhere I have gone with the company has been different but the guides and itinerary have always been excellent and full of knowledge and passion for their country. Add in the social responsibility angle the company has and it top quality ethical practice and you can't go wrong

I recently went on an 11 day tour of India with Intrepid and was impressed with every aspect of the tour, the tour leader and the organisation behind the scenes. I always travel alone so it was a big deal to join a tour, I didn't want to feel less independent or ferried about. I loved being part of a group and the things we saw and did on the tour, I would never have known about or seen if I had been by myself. I loved it from start to finish. Yes the overnight trains were not easy to sleep on, but I managed. Meeting locals on board was a high light for me. English is widely spoken in India and its amazing who you strike up a chat with. I had two problems on the tour - one my own fault and one hotel related. The support from Intrepid was amazing. I cannot thank them enough for going the extra mile to support me. I recommend Intrepid 100% and have gone from thinking an organised tour is for people who don't know about Lonely Planet and can't do solo stuff, to realising its a faster, better, more fun way to get to know a country truly and deeply whilst on a bit of a budget. I will book again and again with Intrepid. I loved it that much! Big thanks to tour leader Daddy H. Devender for his help on day one, and Nick in the Oz office for his fab customer care skills. Also the person who staffed the emergency whatsapp in India - you saved my sanity helping me get there a day late! THANK YOU ALL X

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

I have just completed a 12 day food tour of Vietnam, and had an amazing time. Our tour leader was great, knowledgeable and kind, who helped throughout the trip with recommendations for places on our free days, and spas. All the food we tried was delicious. It is a very fast paced tour, and Bon tried to maximise our experiences for the best.

We had a fantastic time on the Botswana Highlights tour recently. We chose Intrepid because it seemed to suit what we wanted - well planned itinerary, small group, comfortable without being overly luxurious (and pricey), and supportive of the local community and environment. We weren't disappointed, and as we met with other like-minded travellers then we all had a great time. We are already planning our next Intrepid tour - maybe Vietnam & Cambodia :-)
