Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1: Broome / Geikie Gorge / Fitzroy Crossing
Location: Broome / Geikie Gorge / Fitzroy Crossing
Accommodation: Camping (with shared facilities)
Meals Included: lunch, dinner
Welcome to Broome! Or Rubibi, in the language of the Yawuru people, who are the Traditional Owners of the land on which Broome is now located. Start your adventure straight away, setting off early this morning as you travel east towards Fitzroy Crossing. This morning your local leader will pick you up from your hotel at about 8 am. You’ll start your adventure right away and join the Darlgunya Cultural Walk, where your local Indigenous guide greets you with a Smoking Ceremony and some billy tea. Then, stroll through the remnants of the old postal settlement. Learn about the wild Fitzroy River from your guide – its plants, wildlife and the significance to local culture. Tonight, watch the sunset and the stars as they come alive, away from the city lights.
Day 2: China Wall / Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles)
Location: China Wall / Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles)
Accommodation: Eco Safari Tents (with shared facilities)
Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch, dinner
Today, you’ll visit the gold rush town of Halls Creek to see the remarkable China Wall on the way to Purnululu National Park – home of the magnificent Bungle Bungles. When you arrive in Purnululu, take some time to settle into your safari camp, then sit back, relax and enjoy the bush sunset. Relax with a delicious meal and an evening under the stars.
Day 3: Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles)
Location: Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles)
Accommodation: Eco Safari Tents (with shared facilities)
Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch, dinner
Spend the next day exploring the highlights of Purnululu National Park, the most famous of which are the Bungle Bungle domes. Rivers created this landscape of unique orange and black striped ‘beehive’ geological formations over a period of 20 million years. Unbelievably, only the locals knew it existed until the early 1980s. To protect its unique landscape, the area was made a national park in 1987 and now boasts UNESCO World Heritage status. You’ll explore the Echidna Chasm today, known for its towering Livistonia Palm trees. Take the short walk into the gorgeous Cathedral Gorge, where towering rocks create a natural amphitheatre.
Optional Activities:
-
Day 4: Mimbi Caves / Fitzroy Crossing
Location: Mimbi Caves / Fitzroy Crossing
Accommodation: Camping (with shared facilities)
Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch
Say goodbye to Purnululu and travel to the ancient realm of Mimbi Caves – one of Western Australia's largest cave systems, in the heart of Gooniyandi Country. Spiritually significant, these limestone caves are one of the oldest identified sites of human occupation in Australia. Delve into Dreamtime with a local Gooniyandi guide who will share traditional stories and reveal the secrets of Mimbi Caves – a sanctuary of crystal-clear pools, rare fossils and ancient rock art. Share fresh damper and billy tea with the Gooniyandi traditional owners before you head back to Fitzroy Crossing.
Day 5: Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) / Windjana Gorge / Derby / Broome
Location: Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) / Windjana Gorge / Derby / Broome
Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch
Following another night by the Fitzroy River, you’ll head for Bunuba country – once a Devonian reef, this terrain is over 350 million years old and home to a diverse array of animals and plants. Stop at Tunnel Creek – a 750-m cave system where you can explore secret caves and a large variety of wildlife. Here, you’ll also learn the legend of Jandamarra – an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hide-out in the late 1800s. Travel to the geological wonder of Windjana Gorge – a delightful oasis in the outback. Beneath gorge walls rising 90 m, enjoy a picnic lunch as you search for freshwater crocodiles, local birdlife and Indigenous bushtucker. The Gibb River Road then leads you from the Napier Ranges to Broome via the Derby ‘Boab Prison Tree’. When you arrive, your trip will come to an end. If you’d like to extend your stay, just reach out to your booking agent.

Is this trip right for you
This is a camping trip for those who are looking for the basics. Simple facilities and lack of emphasis on creature comforts make this an authentic experience of the Australian outback. A Single Supplement is not available on the default version of this trip. As a single traveller, you will have a tent to yourself on camping nights however, in the remote Bungle Bungles Safari Camp (Day 2 and 3) you’ll be paired up with another single traveller of the same gender. An accommodation upgrade (Camping Plus) is available upon request and subject to availability at an additional cost. Camping Plus can also be booked with the option for a single supplement. Please see the accommodation section of your trip notes or speak to your travel agent for more details.
On some days of the trip, you’ll spend several hours driving through very sparse areas of Australia. Sit back and enjoy landscapes that you would miss in any other form of travel. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped.
This itinerary involves some clambering over rocks, wading in water by torchlight, walking on rocky creek beds and ascending/descending into gorges. A reasonable level of fitness and being sure on your feet is necessary to participate. -
