Head into the heart of one of the most beautiful countries in East Asia with this small-group tour of Taiwan! As a travel destination, this breathtaking country is teeming with historic attractions depicting its rich past and culture, jaw-dropping landscapes, exhilarating night markets, fascinating temples, and traditional restaurants serving delicious Taiwanese dishes. Your journey will begin in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. This island city is filled with palace museums, gorgeous gardens, soaring towers, exotic temples, and lively night markets. From there you will drive to Taroko Gorge and explore Taroko National Park, one of the oldest National Parks in Taiwan, established by the Japanese in 1937. Enjoy a scenic drive to Sun Moon Lake, where you will visit the Wen Wu Temple, built-in 1938 by merging two temples. Next, you will visit the Holy Monk Shrine, dedicated to Monk Xuanzang, and discover the Chikan Tower, the oldest building in Tainans West Central District. Explore Kaohsiung, the third most populous city in the country, before you make your way back to Taipei where your small-group tour of Taiwan will come to an end. Day 2: Taipei – Taroko (B/-/-)

After breakfast, depart to explore one of the oldest National Park of Taiwan, Taroko National Park. Originally established by the Japanese in 1937, when Taiwan was part of the Empire of Japan, it was abolished in 1945 by Chinese after they took over Taiwan. It was re-established only in 1986. Enroute, capture the beauty and your memories with a Photo Stop at Chinshui Cliff, which rise majestically out of the Pacific Ocean. Arrive Taroko National Park, names after the Gorge of the same name and explore its scenic points. Visit Eternal Spring Shrine, dedicated to the 212 veterans who died constructing the Central Cross Island Highway nearby, it offers picturesque view of the park with all its mountains and waterfalls. Dont forget to visit Swallow Grotto, a nesting place for spring swallow bird, naturally carved by the Liwu river by erosion. It is one of the best places to explore Taroko Gorge.Â

Day 3: Taroko – Sun Moon Lake (B/-/-)

Enjoy a scenic drive to Sun Moon Lake, the largest lake in Taiwan. Drive via Central Cross Island Highway, constructed between 1956-1960, it offers scenic view of the surroundings, the drive is a challenging one passing through a rugged and unstable terrain. Pass through Mt Hehuan, one of the few mountains in Taiwan to see snow in winters. Enjoy a photo stop at Wuling, at 3275m, it is the highest motorable pass in Taiwan. Arrive Sun Moon Lake and check in at the hotel. Visit Wen Wu Temple, originally built by Japanese in 1938 by merging two temples, it was reconstructed in Chinese Palace Style in 1969. It consists of Three halls, first dedicated to First Ancestor Kaiji and God of Literature, second dedicated to Martial God, Lord Guan and Lord Yue and the third dedicated to Confucius. The temple is guarded by two Lion Figures, one male and one female, unlike any other Wen Wu temple in mainland China.

Begin your day with the visit to Holy Monk Shrine, dedicated to Monk Xuanzang, a holy monk in Tang Dynasty, is known for his work towards the spread of Buddhism in China. Visit Tse En Pagoda, completed in 1971, this octagonal Pagoda was built in traditional Chinese architectural style. Dedicated to the mother of Chinese president Chiang Kai Shek, this 46 mts high pagoda consists of 12 floors. Later drive to Tainan, once the capital Taiwan Island during the rule of Qing Dynasty from 1683 – 1887. Arrive and check in at the hotel. A brief rest follows visit to Anping Fort, constructed by Dutch East India Company from 1624-1634 and named Fort Zeelandia, it was renamed as Old Anping Fort once it was taken over by the Chinese. Enjoy walking through nearby Old Street Area, the oldest street of Taiwan, is famous for its fresh street food. You can also shop for antiquities and souvenirs besides discovering some ancient temples.

Day 5: Tainan – Kaohsiung (B/-/-)

Explore Tainan, visit Chikan Tower, the oldest building in Tainans West Central District, it was originally built as Fort Provintia in 1652 by the Dutch. Inside the tower, you can visit Haisheng Temple, Wengchang Pavilion, and Penghu College, and on the lawn outside stands a statue of Koxinga accepting the surrender of the Dutch. The most eye-catching things are the 9 imperial plinths at the south gate carried by the turtle-shaped stone Bixi. Visit the Confucius Temple, built in 1665 during the Koxinga dynasty and was first of its king in Taiwan. Later drive to Kaohsiung Foguanshan, the biggest monastery in Taiwan. Explore the monastery and get a chance to learn about Buddhism directly through the monks. Visit the Main shrine and view its huge Buddha Statue. Travel further to Kaohsiung city to arrive and check in at the hotel.

Discover Kaohsiung, the third most populous city of Taiwan. Visit Dragon and Tiger Pagoda, located on the lotus lake, these seven story temples were constructed in 1976. Visit Spring and Autumn Pavilion, a landmark that commemorates the martial saint, Lord Kuan, was considered as the countrys top ten beauty spot. Drive to Lukang township and visit Lungshan Temple, a Chinese folk temple built by Chinese settlers in 1738, it has been damaged and reconstructed many times during the past three centuries. Visit Sanyi Township, a rural village famous for wood carving. Continue drive to Taipei to arrive and check in at the hotel.
