Along the way we take in fantastic wildlife, beautiful beaches, rainforests, deep canyons, rolling hills, endless vineyards, quaint towns, vibrant cities, and one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. This trip takes in the best of one of South Africa’s greatest regions, packing in surprising diversity. In season (August-November) this is also the best place on Earth to watch whales right from the shoreline.

Highlights

  • Wildlife from elephants and lions to penguins and whales (in season)

  • Scenery along the one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world

  • Diverse nature from the forests of Tsitsikamma to the drylands of the Little Karoo.

  • Culture from quaint towns to cosmopolitan Cape Town and nearby wineries

Itinerary

Day 1

Depart London.
**

Day 2

The group flight generally arrives early afternoon. Land only passengers can
meet the rest of the group at the airport; upon arrival we will transfer
about 1hr to the the Sundays River Valley and the lovely Avoca Guest Farm.
The rest of the afternoon is free to relax amidst this bucolic setting.
*Avoca Guest Farm or similar*

Day 3

This morning we head to Addo Elephant National Park. The third largest
national park in South Africa, Addo is home to some 550 elephants (up from a
mere 16 when the park was initially set up) as well as Black rhino, leopards,
lions, buffalos, hyenas, zebras, various antelopes and dung-beetles.
We will enjoy game drives (in our own vehicle) in the park and have the
option of a 2nd game drive as well (at extra cost).
*Avoca Guest Farm or similar*

Day 4

Today we start heading west to the official start of the Garden Route at
Storms River and Tsitsikamma National Park. Stretching along the coast, the
park gets its name from a local word meaning ‘place of abundant water.’
The park is made up of rocky coastlines, fairy-tale forests, waterfalls and
rivers. We have the opportunity to hike in the forest and along suspension
bridges. The area is also a great place for bird-enthusiasts with a variety
of sea, forest and fynbos (scrubland) species present.
*Storms River Mouth Rest Camp or similar*

Day 5

We spend the day at Tsitsikamma where a number of hikes are available as well
as other activities (though some may be dependent on the weather conditions
such as canoeing).
*Storms River Mouth Rest Camp or similar*

Day 6

We start our day with a visit to the Knysna Heads, two tall sandstone cliffs
which form a channel through which the turbulent Indian Ocean enters the
calmer Knysna Lagoon. We have a bit more time to relax in town before leaving
for Oudtshoorn after lunch.
As we head inland and over a pass the landscape changes drastically and we
enter the Little Karoo, a much dryer and hotter region. Oudtshoorn itself
became famous thanks to the trade in Ostrich feathers and is still, today,
the ostrich capital of the world.
Our Guest House is situated out of town in the tranquil rural Karoo village
of De Rust.
*House Martin Guest Lodge or similar*

Day 7

Today we spend all day in and around Oudtshoorn. We start by visiting the
Cango Caves, an extensive complex of caverns with stalactites and
stalagmites. We then enjoy lunch at Buffelsdrift where will overlook a
waterhole that occasionally is visited by elephants, giraffe and springbok.
In the afternoon we visit the beautiful Meiringspoort Waterfall and enjoy a
short walk in the area. (the order in which we do these activities may be
reversed).

*House Martin Guest Lodge or similar*

Day 8

Returning towards the coast we make a stop at Mossel Bay and the Dias museum
complex celebrating the influence of early Portuguese sailors on S. Africa
and the location of the Post Office Tree (an old milkwood tree which was used
to leave messages for passing ships since 1500). We then continue to
Hermanus, famed as the whale capital of the world.
*Windsor Hotel or similar*

Day 9

Today is a free day to relax and enjoy Hermanus. From late August to November
Southern Right whales are easily spotted from shore as they frolic in Walker
Bay. A whale crier sounds his kelp horn when he spots whales off the coast.
Those who want can also do a boat-based whale watching trip. There are also a
number of other activities available from hikes to river cruises and
lagoon-kayaking which are available year-round.
*Windsor Hotel or similar*

Day 10

Our next destination is South Africa’s famed wine region. The wine
industry, which dates back to the 17th Century and was heavily influenced by
French Huguenots, produces some of the best wines in the world. We will have
the opportunity to taste some of these wines before continuing to Cape Town,
the Mother City.
*Sweetest Guest House or similar*

Day 11-12

We spend the next two days in and around Cape Town, Africa's most exciting
city. Our activities in Cape Town will, to some extent, be dictated by the
weather as visits to the top of Table Mountain, which has its own
micro-climate, are determined by cloud cover and wind. Because of this,
often, temperamental weather, it is best not to pre-book the cable car but to
just buy tickets on the spot (not included) Those who are staying longer in
Cape Town post-tour may opt to visit Table Mountain later if the weather
looks as though it may be better then.
There is also the option of visiting Robben Island on one of the days,
however we recommend you pre-book Robben Island with us before the trip (but
pay the tour leader locally).
On one of the days we head down the Cape Peninsula. We follow the Atlantic
Seaboard past the areas of Camps Bay, Llandudno and Hout Bay to the Cape
Point via Chapman's Peak drive, if it is open. The highlight of the day is
our visit to the famous Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, which covers an
area of 7680 hectares. The reserve is home to eland, bontebok, grysbok,
springbok, wildebeest, baboon and ostrich. Rugged cliffs, unspoilt beaches,
shipwrecks and beautiful flora are the main features of the reserve. We will
go on a walk through the reserve for approximately two hours. We first take a
walk to the old lighthouse for the panoramic views, before following the
pathway to the new lighthouse which offer spectacular cliff views. We then
follow the downhill path to the Cape of Good Hope. Once we leave the park we
stop at the former Royal Navy base at Simonstown and take time to visit the
resident penguin colony at Boulders Beach.
*Sweetest Guest House or similar*

Day 13

Our final day of the trip we have the option of doing a township tour,
strolling along the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront or exploring various other
parts of Cape Town. Those on group flights will be transferred to the airport
this afternoon for their flight home, those on a land-only basis the tour
officially ends today.

Accommodation

We spend 11 nights in a range of hotels and guesthouses, each well located for our activities and to keep the drives between destinations relatively short. Properties are comfortable and many have fantastic views. The normal accommodations used on this trip can be found on the day-to-day itinerary; however, below are a couple of the notable places we stay.

De Rust: Housemartin Guest Lodge (nights 5-6)

In the small Karoo town of De Rust is the quaint Housemartin Guest Lodge. Owners Theresa and Jan personally welcome every Exodus group that comes to their home and they take great pride in making guests as comfortable as possible. The property has 12 rooms, each with a private veranda leading into the garden. There is also a swimming pool plus beautiful indoor and outdoor dining areas. The meals at the guest lodge are a particular highlight with seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms to create classic South African dishes.

Hermanus: Windsor Hotel (nights 7-8)

The 120-year-old Windsor Hotel in Hermanus sits opposite Walker Bay, one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world when southern right whales migrate to the bay to breed (July to November). Whale-watching is even possible from the comfort of the hotel restaurant. However, the location of the property is also ideal out of season with a central setting within town and quick access to the 7.5mi (12km) Hermanus Cliff Path.

Food

All breakfasts included

The food you'll encounter on this trip is very similar to the kind of food
you'll be used to at home. There may be the opportunity to try some more
unusual meats such as ostrich, kudu or eland. There are also some options for
vegetarians.

The water provided on this trip is safe and clean drinking water, normally
coming from bore-holes. It is not bottled water, however. If you would rather
have bottled water then this will be at your expense, though we would
encourage you to make use of the safe drinking water provided as this helps
diminish plastic consumption.

A highly enjoyable tour of the beautiful Garden Route in South Africa culminating in the cosmopolitan hub of Cape Town bestraddled by the breathtaking vistas of Table Mountain, Lions Head. A wonderful adventure where game animals such as lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalos, warthogs, girraffes, zebras etc as well as ostritches, whales and penguins can be seen up close and personal and where beautiful forests, gorges, mountains, waterfalls, deserts, caves can be seen in all their glory. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who may be interested in visiting South Africa as this tour is so diverse and varied and gives the "adventurer" a stunning glimpse of this beautiful Rainbow nation.

We had a wonderful trip from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town along the garden route. We started with fantastic wildlife in Addo, on to the beautiful beaches in Tsitsikamma, through the center of the garden route visiting the amazing Cango caves, Mosel Bay and Hermanus before arriving in Cape Town for two day exploring.

What a fantastic trip. Lots to see, scenery, views, birds & animals. The food and weather were excellent too. Accommodation was comfortable, minibus occasionally was a bit bumpy but we were busy taking in all the sights to notice.

We had a full tour with 16 people but our amazing guide Petro Pretorius ensured that everyone had a great experience. I won't repeat everything written in the other reviews - it's all true! You haven't lived till you experience a roadblock of a dazzle of zebra (yes, that's the collective term for them) or meet one of the big five lumbering around a corner in front of your vehicle, eat a 5-star braai meal (bbq but much more) cooked by your hosts in De Rust, gape at the astonishing stalactites in the Kango Caves, gaze from the top of Table Mountain or listen to an ex-prisoner describing life on Robben Island. In a relatively short tour you experience so many different types of scenery, flora and fauna and culture but in manageable chunks. Petro shares her passion for South Africa with you and gives you a full and honest account of the challenges faced by this wonderful but struggling country.

Amazing Adventure down the Garden Route full of Variety!

This itinerary offers something for everyone! From

This itinerary offers something for everyone! From Safaris to National Parks to Whale Watching, City tours and Wine Tasting, every day offers a new adventure and something exciting to look forward to. The pace doesn't feel to rushed with no long drives and even the slightly longer ones broken up with coffee stops and viewpoints. The East Head Viewpont in Kynesa being a particular highlight of mine! You meet some lovely locals including the charming owners full of stories at St Martin's guesthouse and whale watching off the shore line in Hermanus was truly one of the most amazing sites seeing so many whales congregated in the same place breaching and teaching their young to strengthen their fins before heading across to Antarctica to feed. I choose to travel in South Africa's Spring time because I really wanted to see the Whales migrating in Hermanus, little did I realise but it's also an excellent time to visit because all the flowers are in bloom so the drives were really stunning, our guide even mentioned that he hadn't seen the landscapes so green. If you're looking for a leisurely paced trip with a passion for wildlife, landscapes, food and wine then this ones a winner!

This was one of the best holidays we have had in every way. We stayed in some beautiful guest houses, all a bit different with lovely personal and homely touches. The places we visited were quite diverse and made the trip more interesting. The locals were extremely friendly and made us feel welcome. The food was out of this world. I could not fault this holiday and will have fond memories for years to come.

The Garden Route is a diverse trip with so many highlights. It gives a great taster of what Africa has to offer. It's wonderful to enjoy the wildlife in Addo and stay in the beautiful setting in the lemon orchards. Cape Town is fantastic with lots to do and the scenery is stunning. Table Mountain is not to be missed and Robben Island gives a great cultural contrast.
