The many wrecks off their coast still bear witness to this today. After its actual development by the Portuguese in the 18th century, the Ilha Grande was far from boring: it became a hub for the slave trade, then a leprosy station, and between 1903 and 1994 the island finally served as a prison: the infamous Cândido-Mendes- Prison made a name for itself especially under the Brazilian military dictatorship.
