Tour Overview

Open by special arrangement, we are delighted to offer this rare opportunity to visit the ancient and beautiful gardens of Ninfa. Equally rare is the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Popes as we visit the gardens of Castel Gandolfo, the traditional papal residence just outside Rome.

The romantic flower-covered ruins at Ninfa, just to the south of Rome, are as close to gardening perfection as you can get. Scented roses, hydrangeas and jasmines curtain what remains of the walls of medieval buildings and paths meander beside a crystal-clear river. Castel Gandolfo is the papal residence to the south of Rome, whose gardens Pope Francis only recently ordered should be opened to the public. The view from the balcony overlooking the Giardino del Belvedere, with its strict geometric parterres, edged by towering cypresses and umbrella pines, is a sight that will stay long in the memory.

The Villa Lante is a study in geometry and symmetry dating back to the 16th century, with many water features including a huge, balustraded water fountain which is a superb example of late Renaissance style. The 16th century gardens at Villa D’Este, romantically overgrown with tall pines, evergreen oaks and cedars, are renowned for their use of water and the garden seems to be full of sparkling spray.

We shall also visit Viterbo, a medieval walled town which in its heyday rivalled Rome itself.

Location: Rome

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Albergo Santa Chiara

Meals Included: Dinner

We depart from London for our direct flight to Rome (other regional airports available on request). On arrival we shall be met by our guide and continue by comfortable coach to Rome, where we have a short city tour. Rome has a justified claim as one of the world’s greatest cities, combining the magnificence of the Renaissance with the vibrancy and excitement of a thriving city. The sights are many and varied, and include the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Square and Basilica, the Spanish steps, and also the Trevi fountain.Later, we will continue to our comfortable hotel. In the evening we will enjoy a welcome drink, which is followed by dinner.

Day 2

Location: Viterbo

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Albergo Santa Chiara

Meals Included: Breakfast

Following breakfast we depart for Viterbo, capital of northern Lazio and the region’s most historic center, this is a medieval town that during the 19th century was something of a rival to Rome. As we shall see on our guided tour, a number of grand palaces and a host of old churches are enclosed by an intact set of medieval walls.A short distance away in Bagnaia we find the splendid gardens of Villa Lante, described by European garden expert Charles Quest-Ritson as “one of Italy’s greatest Renaissance gardens”. This study in geometry and symmetry dates to 1568 when it was designed for Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara by the architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. The dominant theme is water, and in front of the palazzine is a central water parterre, which is a classic example of late-Renaissance or mannerist style. A later addition is the ornate French-style parterre de broderie, with intricate shapes in clipped box set against a ground cover of reddish gravel. Behind the palazzine and shaded by mature trees, the garden ascends in a series of four terraces. From the top terrace, the Fountain of Dolphins sends water down to the water feature that dominates the second terrace; falling onto the third terrace, the water enters the Fountain of the River Gods; and finally, the circular Candle Fountain that dominates the lower terrace. We return to our hotel in the early evening. Evening at leisure.

Day 3

Location: Castel Gandolfo

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Albergo Santa Chiara

Meals Included: Breakfast

Following breakfast this morning it is hoped that we will visit the gardens of Castel Gandolfo, the traditional papal residence located just outside of Rome. The property has been in papal hands since 1596, though it wasn’t until the 17th century, when Pope Urban VIII commissioned architect Carlo Maderno to design a villa fit for a pontiff, that popes began spending their summers in the healthy air of the Alban Hills. The tour begins with a shaded walk to the Giardino della Madonnina, where holm oaks twist out of ancient masonry, and leads on to the Giardino del Belvedere, formed by a series of rigidly geometric parterres, edged by towering cypresses, cloud-shaped crowns of umbrella pines and gnarled cedars. In the afternoon we visit Ninfa. The gardens here are laid out in the ruins of the village of Ninfa, named after a mythical nymph whose tears shed for a lost lover are said to have become the cool stream, which runs through the centre of the garden. The garden is deemed by many to be the most beautiful in Europe – if not the world. All this belies its turbulent history; burnt in 1382 and beset by malaria, the village of Ninfa was abandoned and lay deserted for hundreds of years. After the mosquito hazard was removed in 1922 by draining the surrounding marshes, the Duchess of Sermoneta and her son Prince Caetani began to lay out a romantic garden among the village ruins. At least 10,000 plants were collected and planting has continued ever since, giving Ninfa an entrancing beauty where flowers from all over the world thrive in glorious companionship.NB: Due to the fragile nature of the gardens our visit will be by way of a conducted private tour – duration 1 hour 30 minutes. Our evening will be spent at leisure.

Day 4

Location: Tivoli

Meals Included: Breakfast

This morning following breakfast we will visit the last of our gardens – that of the Villa d'Este in Tivoli, the 16th century gardens which are renowned for their use of water. The garden is romantically overgrown with tall pines, evergreen oaks and cedars. From the upper terrace the valley seems to be full of sparkling spray and the senses are confused by the continual sound of cascading water. You can amble along the Path of One Hundred Fountains, aptly named, to the remains of the miniature Rometta, constructed in 1568, to represent Rome and its seven hills washed at the foot by the River Tiber.

In the afternoon we will transfer to the airport for our flight back to London where the group will disperse.

Brightwater Holidays offers great value

28-Nov-2019

I would highly recommend Brightwater Holidays. It offers excellent service and value for money. This was my first tour as I normally arrange holidays myself, but this tour - which was to the gardens of Kent and Sussex - was a very pleasant change of pace.

We were on the Tour of the Outer Hebrides. We had a great experience, in no small part due to the excellence of the tour manager and driver.

Recent (September 2023) Scottish holiday not so good. Various 'issues' to do with scheduling and organisation. I'm happy to report however that - after an interval - a letter expressing disappointment brought a full response - including a generous refund. So - with fingers slightly crossed - we'll be booking with Brightwater again in due course.

The recent tour in Northumberland...

30-Sep-2023

The recent tour in Northumberland turned out to be a shambles. Our South London driver took us to Newcastle, but no guide to meet us. Next day still no guide and the bus driver attempted to salvage the tour the best he could despite having no knowledge of the attractions. Fortunately one of the passengers Googled the tides for Holy Island. No holiday guide ever showed up. Coach and hotel were fine. Do these people only offer self guided tours? Take Shearings next time.

I had heard this company...

20-Feb-2024

I had heard this company was a nightmare to deal with, but thought I'd give it a go. Signed up for a tour, then emailed them about how to pay off the balance. No response to 3 emails. I've never encountered a tour company that ignored questions on how to pay off a balance. Looked into other reviews and found many complaints about cancelled tours and refusals to refund deposits.

Two of your tour busses...

26-Jul-2021

Two of your tour busses used the A814 from Garelochhead to Arrochar on 24th July 2021. This route is not suitable for large vehicles and your drivers should not have taken the huge coaches that way. There are clear signs at both ends of the road indicating it is not suitable for HGV's. Our car had to go off into the soft verge to allow your coaches to pass. Please amend your routes to avoid this road in future.
